Is it a good time to travel during the off-season?

Traveling during the off-season has many advantages compared to the peak season.

In Vietnam, summer is considered the peak tourist season with many activities and festivals, while the off-season varies depending on the weather and region, usually falling at the end of the year, from November until before Tet (Lunar New Year).

The end of the year is a busy time for many people. In central Vietnam, this period is the rainy and stormy season, with bad weather. Tourists during this time are mainly international. Even so, many people still choose to travel during the off-season due to several advantages.

Low cost

Airfare and hotel rooms are cheaper during the off-season due to supply exceeding demand. Round-trip airfare with Vietnam Airlines to Quy Nhon during the peak summer season ranges from 5-6 million VND, but during the off-season in November or December, the price is around 2-2.5 million VND.

Hotel room prices are similar. A resort in the Da Nang - Hoi An area that cost 5 million VND per night in the summer and was always fully booked is now around 3.5 million VND. During the off-season, tourists can choose sea-view rooms at a similar price.

Lower-priced hotel systems currently offer rates below 500,000 VND during the year-end period, while other periods see prices ranging from 700,000 to 1 million VND per night, depending on the time and additional surcharges. Furthermore, promotional programs are also concentrated during off-peak periods.

Not crowded

The off-season means fewer tourists. Visitors don't have to crowd beaches and tourist spots, wait for ferries, or struggle to take photos in less crowded areas, and the quality of service is also higher.

In the summer, it takes tourists 3-4 hours to cross the river by ferry to Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong. In November, the ferry crossing on Saturday afternoons takes only about 15 minutes. The return trip on Sunday afternoons is longer, about an hour. On Cat Ba, Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 beaches are almost empty, even though the weather is perfect for swimming.

Similarly, wandering through Hoi An's old town at the end of the year, tourists don't have to jostle with crowds, worry about people getting in the way while taking photos, or wait in line to release sky lanterns along the Hoai River. Most tourists are foreigners traveling individually or in small groups, and they don't cause much noise.

Discover new experiences.

Off-season travel is perfect for those who want to slow down. Tourists can sit and admire the long stretches of coastline in the central region, or retreat to a seaside cafe, sip a hot cup of tea, read a book, and enjoy the cool sea breeze and fresh air.

However, the off-season for tourism also means travel difficulties and bad weather. Travelers need to be prepared for some less-than-ideal experiences. Check the weather before you go or choose times that suit you. Additionally, be prepared to avoid disappointment if things don't meet your expectations.
