Teacher and students amidst fears of landslides.

Following the historic floods at the end of October, a school in a remote commune of Da Nang City is facing serious landslides.

The main campus of Phong Lan Kindergarten is located in the mountainous commune of Tra Tap ( Da Nang City), serving 47 children and employing 10 staff members, including teachers and other personnel. Despite its sturdy construction, the school's location at the foot of the mountain on unstable soil means it is frequently affected by landslides. Following heavy rains in late October and early November, the embankment on the side of the school collapsed, spilling soil and rocks into the school grounds and threatening nearby residents.

More worryingly, cracks on the embankment continue to widen, warning of the risk of landslides that could occur at any time. Many areas behind the school are also experiencing subsidence, with large chunks of soil being washed away, directly affecting the safety of teachers and students.

The risk of landslides has made many parents hesitant to send their children to school. Ms. Ho Thi Ve (from Hamlet 6, Tra Tap Commune) worried: "I'm afraid of the safety risks, so sometimes I don't dare let my child go to school. There are so many landslides around the school; when it rains, the road is difficult to travel on, and some places have collapsed so deeply that it looks very scary."

Ms. Le Thi Tram, Principal of Phong Lan Kindergarten, said that the landslide situation has become increasingly serious after the recent heavy rains. "The sounds of rocks and soil falling from the slope are haunting for both teachers and young children," Ms. Tram said.

Mr. Le Trung Thuc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tra Tap commune, said that the commune has temporarily addressed the landslide to ensure the safety of teachers and students, but this is only a short-term measure. In the long term, the commune is surveying suitable land to build a new school, aiming to ensure the safety of teaching and learning for hundreds of children.

"We have included the project in the medium-term public investment plan for 2026-2030. We hope that the Da Nang City People's Committee will provide funding soon to expedite the construction of the new school to ensure education for children in the commune," Mr. Thuc said.
