ChatGPT, the chatbot tool developed by OpenAI, continues to assert its leading position in the AI field with widespread global usage. According to a report by a research team comprising experts from OpenAI, Duke University, and Harvard University, as of July, ChatGPT recorded approximately 700 million monthly active users, equivalent to 10% of the world's adult population.
These figures, published in a recent academic paper, show that the popularity of these AI chatbots has reached unprecedented levels.
"For a new technology, this rate of global spread is unprecedented," the research team noted.
To date, the number of users could be significantly higher. At the DevDay 2025 event held in early October, CEO Sam Altman stated that ChatGPT currently has 800 million weekly active users. This is a huge leap from the 100 million weekly active users he announced in November 2023, representing a growth of over 700% in less than two years.
The report also revealed that, as of July, ChatGPT processed over 2.5 billion messages per day, equivalent to approximately 29,000 queries per second. This enormous volume of interaction demonstrates the increasing reliance of global users on chatbots for work, study, and daily life.
The explosive growth of ChatGPT is clear evidence of OpenAI's growing influence in the race to develop large language models (LLMs). Meanwhile, other competitors in the market are still quite far behind. Specifically, xAI's Grok currently has around 65 million monthly active users, while Anthropic's Claude and Perplexity AI are both at around 30 million.
In just two years since its launch, ChatGPT has become a global technological phenomenon, helping to shape how people approach, utilize, and interact with AI in the new era.
