The process of establishing the hierarchy and the Catholic imprint in Vietnam.

The history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam records that Christianity began to be introduced into our country around the 16th century through Western missionaries.

Having gone through many ups and downs, by the beginning of the 20th century, the Catholic Church in Vietnam had gradually formed many important dioceses such as Hai Phong, Bac Ninh , Phat Diem, and Lang Son.

A significant milestone was reached on May 20, 1925, when the Vatican officially established the Apostolic Nunciature of Indochina to strengthen the administration of the Church in the region.

This laid a solid foundation leading to the historic event of 1933, when Father Nguyen Ba Tong was ordained, becoming the first Vietnamese bishop, marking a significant step in the independent development of Catholicism in Vietnam.

The 4th Central Cadre Conference in 1948

On May 20, 1948, amidst the fierce resistance war against the French colonial invaders waged by our army and people, the 4th Central Cadre Conference (Northern Indochina) was officially held in the Viet Bac war zone.

At this strategic conference, the Central Committee of the Party focused on a thorough analysis of the war situation, accurately assessing the enemy's new scheme to intensify military offensives and establish puppet regimes. Based on this, the conference outlined many important tasks aimed at consolidating the main forces, vigorously developing the guerrilla warfare movement, strengthening civilian welfare work, and promoting mass mobilization to participate in the resistance.

The conference also particularly emphasized the role of urban work, propaganda activities, and building a strong Party organizational system to serve the protracted resistance war.

Cambodia commemorates victims of the Pol Pot genocide regime.

May 20th each year is the day Cambodia commemorates the victims of the Khmer Rouge genocide led by Pol Pot.

From April 1975 until its overthrow in early 1979, this extremist regime carried out brutal purges and large-scale forced labor.

According to international historical records, approximately 1.7 to over 2 million Cambodians perished due to executions, starvation, disease, and forced labor. The brutality of this regime severely devastated Cambodia's economy, education, culture, and social life.

In recent years, the country has consistently maintained solemn commemorative activities to remind people of the costly lessons of history and to remember those who have passed away.

The HIV virus, which causes AIDS, has been discovered.

On May 20, 1983, the prestigious scientific journal Science published the groundbreaking research of Professor Luc Montagnier and his colleagues at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

The research team has officially announced the successful isolation of a new virus from a patient with swollen lymph nodes. This has been identified as a precursor to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Initially, this virus was named LAV. This historic discovery laid a crucial foundation for world medicine in accurately identifying the cause of AIDS, thereby developing effective blood tests for screening.

For this great contribution, Luc Montagnier was honored with the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2008.
