Quang Ngai Trade Union: Focusing on membership development

With the motto "Wherever there are workers, there is a trade union," the Provincial Federation of Labor (LĐLĐ) has focused on directing all levels of trade unions to implement comprehensive solutions to develop union membership and establish grassroots trade unions, contributing to building an increasingly strong trade union organization.

Strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts.

The Dung Quat Economic Zone and industrial parks in the province currently have over 53,000 workers. According to Nguyen Xuan Quang, Vice Chairman of the Trade Union of the Dung Quat Economic Zone and industrial parks in the province, the unit regularly surveys the situation of workers in the industrial parks. At the same time, they actively promote and persuade eligible businesses to voluntarily establish trade union organizations.

The Son Tinh District Labor Union established the Hoa Ngoc Lan Independent Kindergarten Trade Union in Tinh Phong commune.

Recently, the Trade Union of Dung Quat Economic Zone and Industrial Parks in the province established one new grassroots trade union (the Great Honor International Company Limited Trade Union, with 90 members); and admitted 7,549 new members to the grassroots trade union of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Joint Stock Company. To date, more than 90% of workers and employees in the Dung Quat Economic Zone and Industrial Parks in the province have joined the trade union organization.

In Son Tinh district, large enterprises concentrated in the Tinh Phong and VSIP Quang Ngai industrial parks are not under the management of the Son Tinh District Labor Union. Private family businesses and individual business households do not meet the requirements for establishing a grassroots trade union. According to Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Son Tinh District Labor Union, the union has recently strengthened coordination with the District Department of Education and Training and local authorities to promote the recruitment of union members in independent private preschools in the district. They advise business owners and employees on legal regulations regarding trade unions, as well as the benefits of participating in a trade union. As a result, the Son Tinh District Labor Union has established 4 grassroots trade unions and recruited over 30 union members from the private preschool sector.

Attracting and gathering union members

In the first quarter of 2024, trade unions at all levels in the province admitted nearly 7,700 new members (ranking second nationwide), established 4 new grassroots trade unions, bringing the total number of trade union members in the province to nearly 98,300, operating in 1,218 grassroots trade unions.

According to Nguyen Phuc Nhan, Chairman of the Provincial Labor Union, the Provincial Labor Union's Steering Committee for Membership Development has proactively surveyed and assessed the operational situation and number of workers in businesses in the area; developed a plan for propaganda and mobilization to develop union membership and establish grassroots trade unions. They have also organized meetings and information exchanges with employers and businesses without existing trade unions to encourage the establishment of grassroots trade unions.

At the same time, trade unions at all levels in the province focused on caring for the material and spiritual lives of union members and workers. Many activities have been widely and effectively implemented and highly appreciated by union members and workers, such as: activities during Workers' Month; healthcare for union members and workers; the Trade Union Tet Market; "Welfare for union members and workers"; union members' birthdays; the "Healthy for work and production" program, etc.

In the coming period, trade union levels in the province will continue to consolidate and improve the quality of grassroots trade union activities, focusing on building a team of trade union officials. This is especially important for chairpersons of grassroots trade unions in non-state-owned enterprises who possess intelligence, courage, dedication, responsibility, prestige, and effective working methods. This is one of the three breakthroughs aimed at successfully implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union. Trade unions at all levels will also intensify propaganda, mobilization, and persuasion efforts to raise awareness among workers and encourage voluntary participation in trade union organizations. They will concentrate resources to create breakthroughs in membership development and the establishment of grassroots trade unions, especially in non-state-owned enterprises.
