Guava is a familiar tropical fruit and has become a favorite dessert for many families. However, you may not know that guava leaves are also a valuable herbal remedy, especially for people who are overweight, have diabetes, or cardiovascular disease…

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, guava leaves have a bitter, astringent taste and a warm nature, with the function of reducing swelling and detoxifying. Young guava leaves and buds have been used as folk remedies for a long time, treating many ailments.

1. Guava leaf tea promotes weight loss.

A common cause of weight gain is that the liver processes sugar, converting it into fat before it enters the bloodstream. The liver is the main organ regulating lipid and glucose metabolism, thereby controlling energy balance and body weight. Excess dietary fat is transported to the liver, where it is converted into triglycerides and stored in the body's fatty tissues.

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in guava leaves, can reduce the growth of fat cells by preventing complex carbohydrates from being converted into sugar. Therefore, guava leaf tea can reduce the amount of sugar and calories the body absorbs, supporting weight loss.

Furthermore, recent research has shown that guava leaf extract can improve insulin resistance in the liver, reducing the risk of fatty liver disease and subsequent weight gain.

Guava leaves are a useful herbal remedy for people who are overweight, have diabetes, and have cardiovascular disease.

2. Guava leaf tea is good for cardiovascular health.

Guava leaves contain β-sitosterol, triterpenoids, several natural volatile oils, and acid-based active compounds. These natural components can increase blood vessel elasticity, help lower blood pressure, eliminate bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), and increase good cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol).

A study has shown that guava leaf extract can help lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol – a cause of obesity and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Guava leaf tea helps reduce the risk of obesity, which can lead to cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

3. Guava leaf tea helps treat diabetes.

Japan has approved guava leaf tea as one of the supportive therapies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Compounds in guava leaves help regulate blood sugar levels after meals by inhibiting the absorption of two types of sugar – sucrose and maltose.

Guava leaf tea inhibits certain enzymes involved in converting carbohydrates in the digestive tract into glucose, thereby slowing the rate of sugar absorption into the bloodstream.

4. How to brew guava leaf tea to retain the most medicinal properties

Guava leaf tea is a quick and effective way to enjoy the beneficial properties of guava leaves. You can use fresh or dried guava leaves, with the dosage depending on the type.

For dried guava leaves, use 2.5–5 grams of dried leaves and steep them in about 250 ml of boiling water for about 10 minutes.

For fresh guava leaves, use 5-10 leaves. Wash the fresh leaves thoroughly before processing. Bring about 500 ml of water to a boil on the stove, then add the guava leaves, cover tightly and simmer over low heat for about 10-12 minutes.

Note that guava leaf tea has a slightly astringent and bitter taste. Therefore, you should only drink 1-2 cups per day and after meals. Avoid drinking guava leaf tea throughout the day as it may lead to digestive problems. Additionally, this tea can be enjoyed hot or cold.
