In the 0.28% increase in the CPI in May 2026 compared to the previous month, 8 out of 11 groups of goods and services increased. The housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group saw a 0.8% increase in price index compared to the previous month (average household electricity prices increased by 2.58%; rental housing increased by 0.55%; kerosene prices decreased sharply by 21.06%; gas prices decreased by 4.94%); the household equipment and appliances group saw a slight increase of 0.17% compared to the previous month (air conditioners increased by 0.84%; electric fans increased by 0.11%); the transportation group saw a 0.57% increase in price index compared to the previous month (specifically, average gasoline prices increased by 2.30%); the culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.90% compared to the previous month, and a 3.69% increase compared to the same period in May 2025.
The group experiencing a decrease includes food and beverage services. In May 2026, the price index for this group decreased slightly by 0.05% compared to the previous month and increased by 5.2% compared to May 2025. The main reason for the decrease in rice prices in the Hanoi market is the abundant domestic supply of rice as many localities enter the harvest season, increasing the amount of goods brought to the market and causing prices to tend to decrease slightly.
The clothing, hats, and footwear group decreased slightly by 0.15% compared to the previous month and increased by 1.99% compared to the same period last year; the other goods and services group decreased slightly by 0.01% compared to the previous month and increased by 2.98% compared to the same period last year.
On average, the CPI increased by 4.79% in the first five months of the year compared to the average for the same period in 2025.
According to the Statistics Agency, in May, Hanoi implemented the directives of the Government and central ministries and agencies on price management, inflation control, ensuring a balance between supply and demand, and closely monitoring price developments, especially for essential goods such as gasoline, food, construction materials, and transportation services.
The city is strictly implementing the directives of the Government and the guidance of the inter-ministerial committee of Industry and Trade - Finance on managing gasoline and diesel prices; coordinating with key enterprises and distribution traders to ensure a stable supply for the retail system in the area, preventing any disruptions in supply.
The consumer goods, food, and grocery markets are stable and meet the needs of the people. Distribution systems, supermarkets, and traditional markets maintain sales operations, effectively managing inventory and stabilizing prices.
In addition, Hanoi city is strengthening market inspection and supervision; strictly handling violations related to pricing, commercial fraud, speculation, and hoarding. Businesses operating in the area are required to strictly comply with legal regulations on price listing, selling at the listed price, ensuring product quality, and protecting consumer rights. "Overall, in May 2026, the Hanoi market continued to maintain stability, with the supply and demand of goods ensured, and no major price fluctuations occurred, contributing to the goal of controlling inflation and stabilizing the socio-economic situation in the city," the Hanoi City Statistics Department stated.
