The farewell and the value of Vietnamese players

VHO - In the transfer wave before the 2025-2026 V.League season, the farewell between central defender Nguyen Duc Chien and The Cong Viettel Club not only caused a stir among football fans but also evoked deep reflections on the culture of professional football in Vietnam.

When a key player decides to leave, public opinion is often divided into two streams: sympathy and criticism. But behind that are calculations, the limits between reason and emotion, and questions about loyalty in a volatile environment.

The boundary between reason and emotion

According to many sources, Duc Chien has decided to leave The Cong Viettel ahead of schedule to join Ninh Binh Club, a newly promoted team to V.League next season. This move occurred in the context that the contract between the two sides is still valid until August 24, 2025, while the domestic transfer window will close on August 15. In order to join and play in the first leg with the new team, the player born in 1998 accepted early compensation, the fee was set at 3 billion VND, after a tense negotiation process.

From a personal perspective, this can be considered a reasonable decision. At the age of 27, the most "ripe" time of his career, Duc Chien needs a new environment to challenge himself, especially when he has not reached an agreement to extend his contract with his old team. According to many sources, the 3-year contract with Ninh Binh comes with a signing bonus of up to 6 billion VND per season, an attractive salary that not every club is willing to meet.

However, Duc Chien's decision to leave has sparked a wave of backlash, especially when he did not play in the last 3 matches of the season, including the National Cup semi-final, when the club needed the strongest force. In an official announcement, The Cong Viettel said that this player was not physically fit and proactively asked to withdraw from the squad while the team was very short of players.

That absence is seen not only as a professional deficiency, but also as a spiritual void, which is considered the “red quality” of a team carrying the “legacy” of The Cong. In a professional football environment, personal decisions are inevitable, but the way of behaving before and after each farewell is what determines the humanistic value of football.

Philosophy of decent football people

In the message sent from the club, The Cong Viettel not only expressed regret, but also raised a deeper question: "What is the real value of a player?". This is a question not only for Duc Chien, but for the entire Vietnamese football system, where player values are increasingly inflated, causing the transfer market to become distorted and unbalanced.

The Cong Viettel has reason to worry. As one of the clubs with a systematic training system, they have invested heavily in youth training centers, training players like Duc Chien from the time they were unknown. But when the players become famous, they become “commodities” that other clubs compete for with billion-dollar signing bonuses, something that many youth training teams cannot (or do not want to) compete with.

Reality has proven that many players after moving to a new team with a "blockbuster" contract have not met expectations. The change in environment, the pressure from huge income and especially the gap between reputation and actual performance have caused many deals to become "virtual price fever", where value is no longer measured by expertise, but by the tricks of the agent and the scarcity of quality personnel in the country.

That is why The Cong Viettel remains steadfast in its philosophy: Investing in youth training, believing in internal strength and setting clear limits on spending, instead of following the market. As a club representative affirmed: “We always have to consider, with that amount of money, can we buy a better quality foreign player, or should we give opportunities to young players on the rise?”.

It is not difficult to realize that Duc Chien's story reflects the reality of the Vietnamese football market: Scarcity of high-quality human resources, insufficient training system, instability in club management and especially the absence of a professional and systematic transfer management mechanism. That is what makes famous players easily become "rare goods" and are attached to prices that do not reflect their true value.

Nguyen Duc Chien is one of the talents of Vietnamese football. He was captain of the U23 team, was called up to the national team and played consistently for The Cong Viettel. With 134 V.League matches, 16 goals and 8 assists, he is clearly a quality player. But besides his expertise, his football career is also a story of honor, loyalty, and how he treats those who have nurtured and believed in him.

The transfer market is an opportunity for players to develop, renew themselves and improve their income, which is normal in professional football. But football is not only a game of money. It is also an environment that fosters human values, dedication, gratitude, professional behavior and responsibility to the collective.

The story of Duc Chien and The Cong Viettel, therefore, should not stop at the question of "who is right, who is wrong", but should be a warning to the whole system that Vietnamese football can only develop sustainably if every link, from players, clubs, to managers, behave professionally, kindly and have vision.

Because in the end, the true value of a player is not in the transfer fee, but in how he leaves, and in how people will remember him afterwards.
