On November 4th, the National Assembly discussed the socio -economic development situation in the plenary session.

Highways open up great opportunities.

In her remarks at the National Assembly session, delegate Mai Thi Phuong Hoa (Nam Dinh) cited key points such as the opening of over 2,000km of expressways; the shortened completion time of Long Thanh International Airport; and the upcoming submission of investment approval for the North-South high-speed railway project to the National Assembly

According to National Assembly delegates, breakthroughs in transportation infrastructure development have contributed to the country's socio-economic growth in recent years. (In the photo: North-South Expressway section from Mai Son to National Highway 45). Photo: Ta Hai.

According to her, this was achieved thanks to the leadership and management of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, who closely followed the practical situation, acted decisively and flexibly, provided clear solutions, and clearly assigned responsibilities to each agency, organization, and individual.

Sharing the same view, delegate Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh (Vinh Long) affirmed that never before has the infrastructure of the Mekong Delta region received such strong investment as it does now. Once a "low-lying area" in terms of expressways, the region now has 120km of expressways in operation. The target is to have approximately 548km by 2025 and 763km by 2030.

"These are important decisions of the National Assembly, and the Government and Prime Minister's strong attention and direction have opened up investment opportunities, created breakthroughs, and promoted the development of the Mekong Delta to join the rest of the country," Ms. Thanh said.

Wherever roads are built, the economy develops.

Speaking to the Traffic Newspaper on the sidelines of the National Assembly, many delegates affirmed that, over the past nine months, the development of transportation infrastructure has been one of the bright spots, with many key projects across the country being inaugurated and put into use; many projects have been started and their timelines shortened.

"The breakthrough in transportation has contributed to socio-economic growth," observed Representative Nguyen Truc Son (Head of the Ben Tre Provincial National Assembly Delegation).

Delegate Nguyen Tao (Lam Dong) also commented: "Transportation is like blood vessels. When the blood vessels are clear and there are no bottlenecks, socio-economic development will proceed smoothly."

"We live in mountainous, remote areas, so we understand very well that when transportation develops sustainably, the economy develops accordingly, growing very rapidly. Lam Dong's GDP growth and budget revenue have increased year after year, and one of the major contributions comes from its transportation infrastructure."

According to delegate Tran Hoang Ngan (Ho Chi Minh City), in public investment, transportation is a key sector, receiving very large capital allocations and currently having one of the highest disbursement rates. Thanks to this, a series of large projects have been completed.

“Roads are open, resources are flowing. Thanks to improved transportation, foreign investors have chosen Vietnam as a destination for many years. While investment capital in other countries has decreased, it has increased significantly in Vietnam,” Mr. Ngan shared, adding that the development of port, airport, and seaport systems has further contributed to the country's economic growth in recent years.

According to Mr. Ngan, to achieve this, besides the Party's correct policies and the Government's decisive actions, we must also mention the political determination of the entire transportation sector, and the tireless efforts of workers who toiled day and night on construction sites, undeterred by sun or rain, and regardless of holidays or Tet (Lunar New Year).

Continue developing regional connectivity infrastructure.

Recognizing the importance of transportation infrastructure development for socio-economic development, delegates proposed that in the coming period, it is necessary to continue focusing and allocating resources to quickly implement transportation infrastructure projects to strengthen regional connectivity and create a foundation for growth.

The My Thuan – Can Tho expressway plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region.

Representative Nguyen Tao stated that the Central Highlands region in general, and Lam Dong province in particular, are currently developing a series of regional transportation infrastructure projects. Typical examples include the two expressways connecting Tan Phu (Dong Nai) and Bao Loc (Lam Dong), and Bao Loc and Lien Khuong, under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model.

In particular, the Tan Phu – Bao Loc project, which was initiated in 2020, has yet to be implemented due to financial obstacles.

Recently, during a visit to Lam Dong province, the Prime Minister assigned Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha to chair a meeting to resolve obstacles related to two expressway projects, committing to the early implementation of these two projects with a total length of 140km.

"Local voters are very happy and hopeful because this road will help gradually realize the dream of a highway to the Central Highlands, positioning the local area's value on the investment attraction map," Mr. Tao shared.

According to delegate Vi Duc Tho (Son La), among the 12 main tasks and solutions for 2025, the Government has identified a focus on completing a strategic, synchronous, and modern infrastructure system, especially key national transportation infrastructure projects, the expressway system, and inter-regional projects.

Expressing strong agreement and consensus on the tasks and solutions, delegates also proposed early investment in expressways to create an economic corridor connecting Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Son La, and Dien Bien: “Ministries and agencies should promptly prepare for investment in the expressway project from Moc Chau district to Son La city, ensuring completion before 2030. By 2030, priority should be given to focusing resources on preparing for investment in the expressway from Son La city to Dien Bien province.”

According to the delegates, the expressway is of great importance, promoting regional connectivity; and further helping the provinces in the Northwest in general and Son La province in particular to unleash their potential, unlock resources, and achieve sustainable development.

On the morning of November 4th, the National Assembly held a plenary session to discuss the assessment of the results of the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for 2024 and the projected socio-economic development plan for 2025.

Participating in the discussion, delegates noted that in 2024, the world situation will continue to face many difficulties and challenges. However, under the leadership of the Party, the decisions of the National Assembly, and the dynamic, creative, close, flexible, timely, and decisive management of the Government and the Prime Minister, the socio-economic situation will continue to achieve many positive results. Specifically, it is projected that 14 out of 15 key targets will be met or exceeded, GDP growth is estimated at 6.8-7%, and state budget revenue is estimated to increase by over 10%.
