According to Colombian police, the incident occurred on the Pan-American Highway in the El Tunel area of Cajibio, about 35 kilometers from Popayan, the capital of Cauca province. Local authorities have accused separatist groups belonging to the FARC guerrilla force of being behind this brutal act.
The governor of Cauca province, Octavio Guzman, expressed outrage and stressed the urgent need for central intervention, stating: "Cauca cannot continue to face this barbarity alone. We are facing an escalation of terrorism that demands immediate responses."
The incident also sparked strong criticism from the opposition regarding the Colombian government's current security policy. Presidential candidate Paloma Valencia, who hails from the Cauca region, called it an act of "terrorism" carried out by the FARC separatist group – who had rejected the 2016 peace agreement.
Currently, President Gustavo Petro, who is nearing the end of his term, is still pursuing a policy of "total peace." This policy focuses on dialogue with guerrilla groups through negotiations and intermittent ceasefires.
However, the recent bloody attack has posed serious challenges to the government 's peace efforts amidst the extremely complex situation on the ground.
