The MBC drama "Perfect Crown" was highly anticipated thanks to the participation of two stars, IU and Byeon Woo Seok. Set in a fictionalized South Korea under a constitutional monarchy, the series revolves around a mismatched couple's journey to break free from societal constraints. Despite concluding its run on May 16th with a record-breaking rating of 13.8%, the drama has encountered a major controversy regarding historical accuracy.

On May 19th, an interview was held at a cafe in Samcheong Dong, Jongno Gu (Seoul, South Korea). During the interview, director Park Joon Hwa was visibly emotional. The project's leader even had to step outside the room briefly to compose himself amidst the public pressure. Upon returning, he immediately bowed and apologized to the public, admitting he had no excuse for the past shortcomings.

The director expressed deep regret for using fictional elements as a shield for mistakes in content censorship. He admitted his lack of understanding and disregard for the audience's perspective, inadvertently causing great distress to viewers. Director Park Joon Hwa further revealed that immediately after the final episode aired, many actors called to express their regret, wishing they had contributed more. These heartfelt words weighed heavily on his heart.

The hit TV drama "Perfect Crown" is in serious trouble. Koreaboo.

However, the filmmaker insists he takes full responsibility for all the issues surrounding "Perfect Crown," despite the film's considerable commercial success. Looking ahead, he plans to take a break and promises to seek more advice from consultants on future projects to gain a more multifaceted and insightful perspective.

Strong reaction from experts.

The controversy erupted most intensely after episode 11 aired on May 15th. The scene of King Lee Ahn's coronation before his officials and generals was scrutinized for numerous inconsistencies. Specifically, the king wore a crown adorned with nine jeweled strips instead of the twelve strips traditionally reserved for the emperor. The officials below chanted "cheonse" (long live) instead of "manse" (long live) – a detail that diminished the symbolic significance of a completely independent nation. Furthermore, the characters' tea ceremony, performed in a style heavily influenced by Chinese tradition instead of honoring Korean culture, only added fuel to the fire.

Faced with these numerous unacceptable flaws, many leading experts have spoken out. Renowned history lecturer Choi Tae Seong stated that Korean dramas possess a huge international influence. Therefore, producers are compelled to build corresponding verification systems, invest heavily in research, and establish specialized cultural research institutes.

On his personal Instagram page on May 19th, Professor Seo Kyoung Duk of Sungshin Women's University also expressed a strong opinion. He emphasized the importance of rigorously reviewing projects with historical elements when released through global OTT platforms. This not only helps ensure authenticity but also prevents the risk of cultural distortion between countries.

Beyond mere criticism, a large segment of the public has called for economic sanctions against "Perfect Crown." Many viewers have demanded an immediate halt to the drama's global distribution on Disney+. Related businesses, such as novel releases, scriptbook publications, and merchandise production, have also been called for a complete suspension. A drama once expected to be a shining star for MBC has become a costly lesson for the film industry in preserving and respecting core cultural values.
