This is a rare and special painting by one of the leading painters of modern Vietnamese art. The Folk Singer by famous painter Nguyen Phan Chanh
Previously, the work was only known through archives and exhibitions in Hanoi (1930) and Paris (1931). It was later discovered in a modest house in the French countryside.
Folk Singer was purchased by the present owner’s grandfather at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris in 1931. It was the first time modern Vietnamese painting was presented in the West. Since then, the painting has become a hidden gem, patiently waiting to be rediscovered .
Folk Singer is a typical work of the most "sought-after" period of famous painter Nguyen Phan Chanh (1930 - 1935) - the period when he focused on expressing everyday moments in a very close and familiar way.
Painter Nguyen Phan Chanh (1892 - 1984)
The painting depicts two country women in a rustic setting, surrounded by dominant earth tones. This composition reflects Nguyen Phan Chanh's focus on natural beauty rather than aesthetic novelty, offering viewers an insight into everyday life in early 20th-century Vietnam. The work, which had been "hidden" for nearly a century, is one of the highlights of the Arts d'Asie auction, taking place on June 14 at Sotheby's Paris, and will be on display there from June 8-13, along with other works from the auction.
