Signs that indicate it's time to clean your air conditioner.

VHO - Not everyone knows this.

During the hot season, air conditioners become almost constantly in use in many households. However, many people only remember to clean their air conditioners when they start leaking water, making loud noises, or barely cooling at all.

In fact, before showing noticeable signs of wear and tear, air conditioners often emit various warning signals. Early detection allows users to clean and maintain the unit promptly, preventing overload, increased energy consumption, and reduced lifespan.

Signs that your air conditioner needs cleaning immediately.

The most noticeable sign is that the air conditioner cools less effectively than usual. Users may have to lower the temperature significantly and leave the machine on longer, but the room still doesn't feel as cool as before.

In many cases, the cause is not due to the machine running out of refrigerant or having insufficient power, but rather because the filter, evaporator, or condenser coils have accumulated a lot of dust.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, dirty filters can reduce airflow and affect the performance of air conditioning systems. When air has difficulty circulating through the unit, the equipment has to run longer to achieve the same level of cooling.

Another sign is weak, uneven airflow. Even though the air conditioner is running and the fan is making noise, the amount of air coming out of the vents is noticeably reduced. This usually indicates that the filter is clogged with dust, obstructing the airflow through the cooling coil.

Users should also not ignore any unpleasant odors or musty smells that appear when the air conditioner is first turned on. Dust, moisture, and microorganisms can accumulate in the filter, evaporator coil, or drain pan, causing the air in the room to smell unpleasant. This sign is especially important for families with young children, the elderly, or those sensitive to air quality.

Water leaking from the indoor unit is also a clear warning sign. According to Samsung Vietnam, air conditioners that haven't been cleaned for a long time can cause the drainage system to become clogged; dirty filters can also affect air circulation and cause water to accumulate. This situation not only dampens walls, damages floors and furniture, but also poses a safety risk if water drips near electrical outlets or electronic devices.

Additionally, if the air conditioner makes strange noises or the electricity bill increases unusually despite unchanged usage habits, users should also check the condition of the unit. When dust accumulates over time, the air conditioner has to work harder, thus consuming more electricity and being more prone to malfunctions.

How often should I clean my air conditioner?

Air conditioner cleaning should be understood as two parts: cleaning the filter and cleaning and maintaining the entire unit.

The air filter is the part that needs cleaning most frequently. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that users clean or replace air conditioner filters every 1–2 months during the cooling season. If the air conditioner is used continuously, the house is dusty, or there are pets, this frequency should be shortened.

ENERGY STAR also recommends checking the filters monthly, especially during periods of heavy use. Dirty filters not only reduce airflow but also cause the system to work harder.

From the manufacturer's perspective, Daikin recommends cleaning the filter approximately every two weeks, because when the filter is clogged, the amount of air drawn in decreases while the power required for cooling increases. Panasonic Vietnam and Toshiba Lifestyle Vietnam also suggest cleaning the filter approximately every two weeks when the machine is used frequently.

Meanwhile, deep cleaning of the indoor and outdoor units, checking the drainage system, or checking the refrigerant should be done at longer intervals and usually requires a professional technician. For home air conditioners, users can refer to a schedule of every 3–6 months, depending on usage frequency and installation environment.

Families living near busy roads, construction sites, dusty areas, those with pets, or those who use air conditioners almost all day should clean their units more frequently.

Don't wait until your air conditioner breaks down before cleaning it.

Cleaning your air conditioner isn't just about making it cool faster. A clean air conditioner allows for better airflow, reducing the need to drastically lower the temperature or running the machine for extended periods without the room getting cool. This contributes to energy savings and ensures the device operates more smoothly.

In addition, air conditioners primarily circulate air within a room. If the filter and indoor unit are dusty or have a musty smell, the air quality in the living space can also be affected.

Users can remove the filter themselves, wash it, and dry it according to the manufacturer's instructions. However, for issues such as water leakage, strange noises, persistent poor cooling, or the need for deep cleaning of the indoor and outdoor units, it is advisable to call a professional technician for inspection.

A clean air conditioner not only cools the room faster, but also makes the device last longer, saves more electricity, and is safer for the whole family.
