Besides bacteria and viruses, conjunctivitis can also be caused by air pollution, exposure to chemicals, and wearing contact lenses.   Or sand may get in the eye. Common symptoms include itchy, irritated, swollen, red eyes, discharge, and crusting inside the eye, among other symptoms, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

If conjunctivitis is accompanied by eye pain, sensitivity to light, or blurred vision, you should see a doctor immediately.

In cases of conjunctivitis caused by bacteria and viruses, children are the most susceptible group. They can become infected by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching their faces. Direct contact with someone who has conjunctivitis or transmission through droplets from coughing or sneezing can also spread the disease.

Conjunctivitis can range from mild to severe. Treatment methods also vary depending on the cause. In fact, not all cases of conjunctivitis require medical treatment.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye) can resolve on its own, and the recovery time varies depending on the causative agent. For example, viral conjunctivitis is usually milder and may resolve within 1 to 2 weeks without treatment. If the cause is bacterial, the symptoms will subside after 2 to 5 days and resolve completely after at least 2 weeks.

Patients can take several home remedies to reduce discomfort. First, apply a warm or cool compress to the eye, then rinse the eyelid area with warm water. Over-the-counter eye drops are also very effective in reducing symptoms.

In addition, patients should also take precautions to avoid spreading the infection to family members, wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their eyes, and not share personal items such as towels, pillows, or eye makeup with others.

Although conjunctivitis often resolves on its own, some severe cases require prompt medical treatment. In severe cases, the disease can damage the cornea and threaten the patient's vision, especially when the causative agents are Chlamydia bacteria, gonorrhea bacteria, or adenovirus.

Patients should see a doctor immediately if conjunctivitis is accompanied by eye pain, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, excessive redness, or if symptoms persist and worsen, according to Healthline .
