Manager David Moyes believes Everton did not deserve to lose to Liverpool.

In the early hours of April 3rd, Diogo Jota's goal in the 57th minute secured Liverpool's 100th derby victory, bringing them closer to the Premier League title. However, the visitors were unhappy with the decisions from referee Sam Barrott and his assistants.

Jota's goal in the 57th minute was highly controversial because it stemmed from a pass by Ryan Gravenberch toward Luis Diaz, who was clearly offside. Everton defender Tarkowski then intercepted the pass toward Diaz, allowing Jota to score from a legitimate position.

Manager Moyes argued that the referee should have called Liverpool offside in that play because Diaz was behind the Everton defense, and the Colombian player later stepped up to challenge Tarkowski, affecting the situation where Jota received the ball and scored.

“He (Luis Diaz) was offside,” Moyes said after the match. “I’m not looking for an explanation. I just told the referees that I was disappointed. The decision was quite obvious. Our player was holding the offside trap, and Diaz was behind Tarkowski.”

Everton argued that Diaz was involved in the play, but the referees ruled that the Colombian player made no contact.

Moyes expressed doubts about the competence of the refereeing team, especially the assistant referees: “I’m not sure the linesmen did a good job tonight. Sometimes the flag went out too early, sometimes too late. I don’t think they did a good job.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot argued that according to the rules, it wasn't offside because Tarkowski intercepted the pass before the ball reached Diaz. However, the Dutch strategist also stated that he didn't like that type of offside rule: "It (the offside rule) doesn't help the team that wants to attack. But the application of the rule this time is beneficial to us."

The Times reported that VAR and the refereeing team determined that Diaz – who was in an offside position – did not affect Tarkowski's interception.

According to the current offside rule issued by FIFA and IFAB, even though Gravenberch passed the ball to Diaz, who was in an offside position at the time, Tarkowski's touch on the ball made the subsequent play valid.
