Every year during the summer, the free swimming lessons organized by the Youth Union of Tra Tan commune (Tra Bong district, Quang Ngai province) attract nearly 150 local children aged 8-12. The instructors are officials and Youth Union members, with the support of members of the Social Volunteer Team and the health station of Tra Tan commune.
According to Mr. Truong Van Lam, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Tra Tan commune, Tra Bong is a mountainous district with many ponds, lakes, streams, and waterfalls. Every year, drowning incidents occur, leaving many families heartbroken. The reasons are children lacking swimming skills and water safety skills, and the awareness of families and the community regarding drowning prevention is still limited.
"With the desire to create opportunities for children to learn swimming skills and prevent drowning, for nearly three years, the Youth Union of Tra Tan commune has organized swimming lessons for hundreds of local children. As a result, during this time, there have been no drowning incidents in Tra Tan commune," said Mr. Lam.

From the very beginning of summer, Mr. Lam conducted a survey and selected a branch of the Giang River, an area with calm, shallow water and no rocks or algae. Then, he stretched ropes from both sides of the river to create three lanes, each 5-6 meters long, forming a safe area for children to learn to swim.
Here, children will be trained in basic skills such as arm and leg movements, breathing, and various swimming styles including backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. They will also be taught to recognize danger levels and how to handle emergency situations. With enthusiastic guidance, the children learn to swim quickly and enjoyably.
In addition to teaching swimming, the Tra Tan Commune Youth Union also collaborates with doctors and nurses from the Tra Tan Commune Health Station to instruct children on first aid, resuscitation, external chest compressions, and other skills to prevent drowning.
Mr. Truong Van Lam shared: "Because the commune is still facing difficulties and has not yet built a swimming pool, and the budget is limited, we utilize the river area to teach swimming and drowning prevention skills to the children. It is precisely for this reason that we have received attention, support, and commendation from higher authorities. This is the motivation for the Tra Tan Commune Youth Union to maintain, develop, and expand this model."
Speaking with a reporter from Thanh Nien newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Secretary of the Tra Bong District Youth Union (Quang Ngai), said that the free swimming lessons model of the Tra Tan Commune Youth Union is one of the good models that has been maintained for a long time and brought high effectiveness.
