Samsung recently showcased a prototype of a new generation foldable display, attracting significant attention from the tech world. According to sources, this is likely the type of display Apple will use for its first foldable iPhone, commonly known as the iPhone Fold.
The most striking feature of this prototype lies in its ability to virtually eliminate the crease when the screen is unfolded. In the recorded images and videos , the central fold is barely noticeable, even "disappearing" when viewed head-on. This is a significant improvement over current foldable panels, which often reveal quite noticeable creases after extended use.
For a long time, Apple's failure to release a foldable iPhone, despite Android manufacturers having been ahead for 6-7 years, has raised questions among observers. One of the main reasons for this stems from Apple's very stringent requirements for display experience.
According to sources, Apple is unwilling to accept the appearance of a noticeable crease in the middle of the screen when fully unfolded. The company has asked Samsung Display, its long-time screen supplier, to develop a panel that doesn't reveal this crease. This is a major challenge because even Samsung's own foldable phones haven't been able to completely solve this problem.
The development process appeared to be so lengthy and complex that Apple had to mobilize its own design engineering team to collaborate with Samsung. According to sources, the South Korean tech giant achieved results that met the iPhone manufacturer's requirements last year.
The Verge reports that Samsung Display showcased a new foldable display prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026. The display was presented with no visible crease. In the showcase images, the display surface appears so seamless that, without prior demonstration, viewers would find it difficult to recognize it as a foldable panel.

Another comparison image shows a clear difference between the current Galaxy Z Fold screen and the new prototype. While the commercial screen still reveals a crease in the center, the prototype is almost completely flat.
However, according to a video posted by SamMobile , the new panel still shows very small creases when viewed from certain angles. The site suggests that Samsung may apply this screen technology to future generations of the Galaxy Z Fold.
Notably, the aspect ratio of the prototype closely matches previously rumored information about the iPhone Fold. The Verge also reported that this screen only appeared briefly at the Samsung booth before being quickly removed, possibly due to a display error.
