That is the important information given at the Conference summarizing the activities of providing drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment for prisoners in prisons in 2024" held this morning, December 13, in Da Nang city.
The conference was attended by Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Senior Physician, Head of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, Major General Nguyen Viet Hung, Deputy Director of Department C10 - Ministry of Public Security , Colonel Ha Thi Minh Hue, Head of the Medical Department of Department C10, and representatives of prisons, compulsory education facilities, and reform schools.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Major General Nguyen Viet Hung said: The rate of prisoners in prisons suffering from tuberculosis, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, tuberculosis/HIV, hepatitis B, C and other infectious diseases is 10 times higher than in the community.
High density of detention in prisons, unsynchronized infrastructure, many long-established infirmaries that have deteriorated and no isolation treatment area for prisoners with tuberculosis, lack of human resources and medical supplies are challenges for the work of diagnosing, detecting and treating tuberculosis.
Major General Nguyen Viet Hung, Deputy Director of Department C10, Ministry of Public Security, spoke at the conference to review activities of providing drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment for prisoners in prisons in 2024. |
Faced with these difficulties, in recent years, the National Tuberculosis Control Program has coordinated with Department C10 to promote tuberculosis prevention activities with specific measures such as: Supporting screening, detecting, admitting and treating a large number of prisoners with tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis, and providing medical equipment for tuberculosis screening for prisoners. In particular, the expansion of the number of Xpert tests with high sensitivity and specificity has helped detect tuberculosis early in many prisoners even before symptoms appear.
Sharing at the conference, Dr. Dinh Van Luong expressed strong determination in tuberculosis prevention work in prisons. Head of the National Tuberculosis Control Program Executive Board requested units of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, Tuberculosis Control Programs of provinces and cities to coordinate more closely with Department C10 and prisons in tuberculosis prevention and control work.
First, it is necessary to increase the screening criteria for prisons and the budget for building isolation treatment areas for prisoners with tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis. The provincial TB control program increases the X-pert screening criteria for prisoners in prisons to detect early tuberculosis cases for treatment, helping to reduce the infection rate in detention areas.
The Head of the National Tuberculosis Control Program Executive Board awarded certificates of merit to groups and individuals with outstanding achievements in tuberculosis prevention work in prisons. |
At the same time, the C10 Departments and the Provincial Tuberculosis Control Program and relevant units need to find additional funding sources for TB prevention and control activities in prisons, research and propose remuneration for officers working in TB prevention and control in prisons, compulsory education facilities, reformatories, etc.
Tuberculosis prevention work in prisons has profound humanitarian significance and is one of the strategic goals of the National Tuberculosis Control Program aiming to end tuberculosis in Vietnam.
