On February 22, the Ministry of Health sent an official dispatch to Lam Dong Department of Health regarding the incident of mistaken endoscopic surgery at Lam Dong General Hospital.

The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management requested the Director of the Department of Health to contact and organize a meeting with the family, apologize and consider the wishes of the patient and family to resolve the matter in a reasonable and equitable manner. At the same time, the Department of Health urgently works with the Hospital Board of Directors, only allowing surgery when all conditions are met to ensure patient safety; direct, inspect and supervise affiliated units to strictly implement the set of criteria for quality of Vietnamese hospitals, the set of criteria for assessing the level of surgical safety...

The Ministry of Health also requested the Department of Health and Hospitals to learn from experience, strictly implement the regulations of the Ministry of Health; review and clarify the responsibilities of related individuals and groups and propose forms of handling.

On February 20, Mr. NHH (61 years old, residing in Lam Ha district) was taken by his family to Lam Dong General Hospital for examination. After an X-ray, this male patient was informed that there was a string inside his abdomen and was advised to undergo laparoscopic surgery to remove this string.

However, when performing the procedure, the doctors discovered that there was no string in Mr. H's abdomen. When re-examining, the medical staff discovered that they had mistakenly returned the X-ray results of another patient.

On February 22, a representative of Lam Dong General Hospital said that they had held a review meeting for the team involved in returning the wrong X-ray results to patient H. On the same day, hospital leaders, department representatives and related people went to the male patient's house in Lam Ha district to apologize. The patient and his family agreed to the apology from the authorities.

In addition, Lam Dong General Hospital will refund the hospital fees; examine and monitor the health of patient H. until he recovers. This unit is continuing to clarify the cause to have a direction to handle the staff's mistakes during the emulation and reward meeting.
