Hanoi Grade 10 Literature Exam: Relatable yet Differentiating

VHO - On the morning of May 30th, nearly 125,000 Hanoi students completed the Literature exam, the first subject of the entrance exam for 10th grade in public high schools for the 2026-2027 school year. According to observations at several exam centers, many students felt that the Literature exam was familiar, not too difficult, but had a differentiating effect.

At the exam center at Tran Duy Hung Secondary School, Yen Hoa ward, Dang Ngoc Minh Chau, a student in class 9A3 of Pascal Secondary School, commented that this year's Literature exam seemed easy at first glance but still had a differentiating factor.

According to Minh Châu, many questions require candidates to read the instructions carefully; answering based on intuition or writing vaguely will make it difficult to achieve a high score.

Minh Châu said that the poem in the reading comprehension section was quite relatable and easy to understand. The social commentary question about some young people gradually losing connection with the world around them was also a real issue, close to students' lives, which made it interesting to write the essay.

"I'm quite lucky because I've studied and reviewed this topic before. With this year's exam, I think candidates can score around 8 points if they answer carefully," Minh Chau shared.

At the exam center at Tran Phu High School, Linh, a student from Hoang Van Thu Secondary School, said that this year's Literature exam was quite manageable. She completed all the questions and is confident of achieving a good result. "Now I just hope to do well on the English exam this afternoon," Linh said.

Meanwhile, Le Dinh Toan, a student from Giap Bat Secondary School, shared that he registered for Tran Phu High School because it is his dream school. Although his Literature score did not meet expectations, Toan still hopes to do better in Foreign Language and Mathematics to improve his overall results.

Candidate Dang Ngoc Minh Chau and her parents were overjoyed after the first exam.

Several other candidates also commented that this year's Literature exam was of moderate difficulty. For students with a good foundation of knowledge, who studied thoroughly, carefully read the requirements of each question, and knew how to allocate time wisely, a score of 7.5 or higher is achievable.

Also at the exam center at Tran Duy Hung Secondary School, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoan, residing in Me Linh, Hanoi , said that because their home was far away, she and her daughter had rented a room near the exam center since the afternoon of May 29th to have more control over their travel time. Her daughter, Hoang Ngoc Diep, was eligible for direct admission to the Literature specialized class at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students, but because she loved Chemistry, she still registered to take the exam for the Chemistry specialized class at the same school.

According to Ms. Ngoan, both parents and students want to achieve good results in their first choice of university, but the family doesn't put pressure on the child. "I just hope my child enters the exam with the most relaxed mindset and performs to the best of their ability," Ms. Ngoan shared.

Mr. Huu Thanh welcomed his daughter "Bi Ngo" with a unique cheering sign.

At the exam center at Tran Phu High School, Ms. Ha, residing in Gia Thuy ward, said she was also nervous as her child entered this important exam, but always tried not to show her anxiety in front of her child. According to her, the most important thing during the exam days is to take care of her child's health and encourage them to maintain a stable mental state.

"At this stage, the most important thing is no longer how much more knowledge you learn, but maintaining good health and a stable mindset to enter the exam room," Ms. Ha shared.

Some Literature teachers believe that this year's exam questions are not overly difficult, the materials are relatable, emotionally rich, suitable for the students' age group, and align with the competency-based assessment orientation of the 2018 General Education Program. The questions do not require students to memorize mechanically, but rather focus on their ability to understand texts, appreciate poetic imagery, and express their personal thoughts.

The reading comprehension section uses the poem "Moon in the Forest and the Children" by Thanh Thảo. The questions are designed to progress from recognition to application, with the initial questions being manageable for students with a solid grasp of basic knowledge. However, in the application questions, candidates must be able to explain, relate, and express their viewpoints clearly to achieve a good score.

Optimistic attitude in the first exam.

Notably, the social commentary question required candidates to propose solutions for creating meaningful and positive connections in the context of a segment of young people gradually losing connection with the world around them. According to the teacher, this is a relevant issue in today's life, giving students the opportunity to apply their personal experiences, but it also requires the essay to have specific arguments, appropriate evidence, and avoid mere storytelling.

With this structure, teachers believe the score distribution will likely be at a moderate level. Students with good reading comprehension, organizational skills, and coherent expression can achieve scores of 7-8. However, to achieve higher scores, the essay needs to demonstrate depth of thought, solid reasoning, clear language, and a unique approach, avoiding formulaic writing.

On the afternoon of May 30th, candidates continued to take the Foreign Language exam in the form of objective multiple-choice questions, with a time limit of 60 minutes. On the morning of May 31st, candidates took the Mathematics exam, with a time limit of 120 minutes. For candidates applying for specialized classes, the specialized subject exam will be held on June 1st.
