Not as famous as Ta Xua, Y Ty, or Mu Cang Chai, the sea of clouds at Keo Lom still retains its rare pristine beauty, where visitors can quietly observe the layers of white clouds drifting at the foot of the mountains.

The sea of clouds is as beautiful as a watercolor painting.

Located in the Keo Lom pass area, in Na Son commune, Dien Bien province, this place is gradually becoming an attractive cloud-watching destination for those who love exploring Northwest Vietnam.

Keo Lom is one of the most beautiful mountain passes in Dien Bien , with its winding terrain, high altitude, and characteristic high-altitude climate, making it ideal for the formation of sea of clouds in the early morning.

What makes Keo Lom unique is the feeling of "touching the clouds." Between 5 and 7 a.m., especially on cold days from late autumn to early spring, the entire valley is enveloped in a thick sea of clouds. The undulating mountain ranges, hidden amidst the white clouds, create a scene that is both majestic and gentle, like a traditional ink painting.

As the sun gradually rises from behind the mountain slopes, its rays pierce through the clouds, creating streaks of golden light that awaken the landscape after a long, cold night. It's no exaggeration to say that many describe Keo Lom as possessing a beauty that is both majestic and poetic, characteristic of the Northwest mountains and forests.

Beyond the sea of clouds, the journey to Keo Lom is also a memorable experience. From Dien Bien Phu city, travelers follow National Highway 279 towards Dien Bien Dong. The further you go, the more winding the road becomes, with characteristic hairpin bends of the high mountain region. On both sides of the road, the green expanse of old-growth forests, corn fields, and villages peeking through the early morning mist stretches as far as the eye can see.

The road through Keo Lôm is about 20km long with many consecutive mountain passes and steep slopes, suitable for those who enjoy the thrill of conquering challenging terrain.

Locals say the best time to go cloud hunting in Keo Lom is from around October to March of the following year. This is the period when temperatures drop, humidity is high, and there is a large temperature difference between day and night – ideal conditions for the formation of thick sea of clouds.

For stunning photos, visitors should leave very early, even staying overnight near the pass to catch the sunrise. The most impressive moment usually occurs when the sun rises above the mountain peaks, casting a golden-orange light over the fluffy white clouds like ocean waves.

Many photographers describe Keo Lom as "a sea of sky in the mountains," because when viewed from the top of the pass, the swirling clouds filling the valleys create the feeling of looking out at the ocean.

Discover the inherent tranquility of the mountains and forests.

The appeal of Keo Lom also lies in its unspoiled, uncommercialized beauty. Without many tourist services, crowded cafes, or pre-built photo spots, it retains the inherent tranquility of the mountains and forests. This is precisely what makes it so beloved by many visitors. They come to Keo Lom to find peace, to listen to the wind rustling through the mountain slopes, and to feel the vastness of Northwestern Vietnam's nature.

Besides cloud hunting, tourists can combine their trip with exploring the cultural life of the ethnic minorities in the highlands around Dien Bien. Houses perched precariously on mountain slopes, sprawling terraced rice fields, and rustic highland markets create a picture rich in the essence of the mountainous region. Dien Bien is famous not only for its history but also for the pristine natural beauty of this remote northwestern border region.

In recent years, images of the sea of clouds at Keo Lom have appeared more and more frequently on travel forums and social media. However, the area is still not overly crowded, allowing each person to find their own private space amidst the vast expanse of clouds and mountains. For those who love natural beauty and want to discover a unique destination in Northwest Vietnam, Keo Lom is perhaps a journey worth undertaking at least once.
