According to the Northern Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Station, on May 25th, Hanoi experienced intense and exceptionally intense heat; temperatures recorded at the weather station at 1 PM were 39.7°C in Lang, 39°C in Son Tay, 38.6°C in Ba Vi and Ha Dong, and 38.5°C in Hoai Duc; the lowest humidity levels were 39-42%.
Due to the influence of the southeastern edge of the developing and expanding hot low-pressure area in the West, Hanoi will continue to experience intense and exceptionally intense heat on May 26th and 27th; the highest temperatures will generally range from 39-41 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 41 degrees Celsius. The period of intense heat, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, will be from 9 am to 7 pm daily.
The agency noted that the temperature forecast in the heatwave bulletin and the actual temperature felt outdoors often differ by 2-4 degrees Celsius, and can even be higher depending on surface conditions such as concrete, asphalt, and glass. In addition to high temperatures, the humidity in Hanoi is relatively low, commonly ranging from 38-43%.
Due to the impact of intense and exceptionally severe heat combined with low humidity, there is a risk of explosions and fires in residential areas due to increased electricity demand, and a risk of forest fires. In addition, the heat can cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke in people who are exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.
Around the evening and night of May 27th, Hanoi experienced thunderstorms, and temperatures gradually decreased. By May 29th, Hanoi's heatwave ended.
To protect their health during hot weather, Hanoi residents should limit outdoor activities between 10 am and 5 pm; if outdoor work is unavoidable, they should wear hats, sunglasses, and stay hydrated. People should also use electrical appliances wisely, avoiding overloading that could cause fires; and closely monitor weather forecasts to proactively protect themselves from the heat.
