When Carlo Ancelotti accepted the offer to manage the Brazilian national team, many believed his biggest challenge would lie on the flanks of the defense. But just weeks before the 2026 World Cup, another, even more worrying, problem is emerging: instability in goal.

Brazil has never lacked good goalkeepers. From Claudio Taffarel and Dida to Marcos and Alisson Becker, the "Selecao" have always entered major tournaments with a name that provides absolute reassurance.
This time it's different; none of the current contenders inspire confidence in the fans, judging by their performances last season.
In theory, Alisson is still considered the number one choice. In terms of class and experience, the Liverpool goalkeeper is superior to the rest. However, the biggest problem for the Liverpool star lies in his fitness. A hamstring injury has kept him out of action for almost two months, and he is racing against time to regain his form before the World Cup begins.
For a goalkeeper, ball control and consistency are just as important as physical fitness. A lack of consistent playing time means mistakes can happen at the worst possible time.
Meanwhile, Ederson presents another concern related to his mental state. The Fenerbahce goalkeeper is going through a turbulent period in Türkiye. He clashed with fans, was suspended after his violent reaction in the derby against Galatasaray, and even punched the VAR room in a fit of anger. This image is a complete contrast to the coolness that had been Ederson's trademark for many years.

More than anyone else, Ancelotti understands that in a short tournament like the World Cup, just one moment of losing control can ruin the entire campaign.
The backup options also offer little hope. Bento is highly regarded within the national team but has consistently made mistakes at his club. His most recent blunder in Saudi Arabia has only increased the pressure.
Hugo Souza has been outstanding at Corinthians but still lacks consistency in aerial situations. Weverton is experienced but past his prime, while John Victor has almost disappeared due to injury and lack of playing time.
The real concern for Brazil isn't a lack of goalkeepers; they still possess renowned and experienced goalkeepers. The problem is that none of them enter the World Cup in convincing form to be the absolute guarantor for the entire team.
That's a rare feeling in Brazilian football because, in the past, the Selecao always had a goalkeeper who reassured fans before the ball started rolling. Currently, Ancelotti has many options, but none have truly created that sense of security.
