- On the afternoon of May 6, in Lang Son city, the National Agricultural Extension Center, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lang Son province to organize the Agricultural Extension Forum @ agriculture to discuss "Solutions to build facilities and safe areas for animal diseases" in Lang Son .
The Forum was attended by leaders of the National Agricultural Extension Center, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine; leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lang Son province; representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of some provinces and cities: Hanoi , Bac Giang, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen; leaders of the Vietnam Livestock Association and 80 delegates representing businesses, livestock cooperatives and livestock households in Lang Son province.
Over the years, the livestock industry has always played an important role in economic development and ensuring food security of the country. Currently, the livestock industry accounts for a large proportion (over 25%) in the structure of the agricultural sector and is an important livelihood for more than 10 million rural families.
In 2024, the total output of fresh meat of all kinds will reach 8.26 million tons, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2023. In addition, the output of industrial animal feed will reach more than 21 million tons, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2023. The export turnover of livestock products in 2024 will reach 533.6 million USD, an increase of 6.5% compared to 2023.
However, according to experts, the export of Vietnam's livestock products to other countries is not as expected because the total livestock herd of the country is large (poultry herd reaches more than 520 million heads, pigs have more than 28 million heads...), basically still raised in traditional, fragmented, small-scale forms, not ensuring disease safety.
For Lang Son province, in recent years, relevant levels and sectors in the province have been actively implementing disease control programs, building disease-free livestock farming areas associated with production-consumption linkage, traceability and export orientation.
Speaking at the forum, the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lang Son province said: According to the requirements of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), one of the prerequisites for exporting meat to markets is to build a disease-free livestock area. Therefore, it can be seen that building a disease-free area is very necessary, not only in the context of complicated developments of livestock diseases but also to move towards a sustainable livestock industry.
Also at the forum, Mr. Le Minh Lich, Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center, stated: Disease-free livestock farming is not a new issue but has become more urgent than ever. In recent years, diseases such as avian influenza, African swine fever, lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows, foot-and-mouth disease in livestock, etc. have been threatening not only the agricultural sector but also the national reputation in exporting animal products.
Within the framework of the forum, representatives of livestock and poultry farmers in Lang Son province, scientists and livestock experts from the National Agricultural Extension Center, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the Vietnam Livestock Association, etc. exchanged experiences and clarified effective disease prevention measures in livestock farming; solutions to build disease-free livestock facilities and areas; challenges and opportunities in developing disease-free livestock farming to serve domestic food needs and export...
By participating in the forum, relevant state management agencies of Lang Son province, businesses, facilities and livestock households in the province have supplemented a lot of knowledge and experience in implementing biosafety livestock farming, especially experience in building disease-free areas to build safe livestock farming areas and improve the effectiveness of disease management.
Through the forum, with more knowledge and experience in applying modern science and technology to livestock farming, businesses, facilities and households in Lang Son will minimize the impact of epidemics and create a safe livestock farming environment, thereby creating a livestock farming system that not only ensures domestic safety but also meets the strict requirements of the international market, thereby aiming at the goal of exporting livestock and poultry.
After the forum, the National Agricultural Extension Center and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine will add experiences in building disease-free areas, experiences in disease prevention and control in livestock of enterprises, cooperatives, and livestock households in Lang Son province to solutions for forums held in other provinces and cities in the coming time.
It is known that according to statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, up to now, the whole country has 3,768 facilities and areas granted disease safety certificates.
