At the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department of Kien An Hospital, the pace of work is always hectic as it receives many seriously ill and critical patients. In the wards, nurses continuously monitor vital signs, coordinate with doctors to perform specialized techniques, and promptly handle any unusual developments in the patients' condition.
During a central venous catheter placement procedure for a critically ill patient, the nurse prepares all necessary instruments, ensures aseptic technique, and works closely with the doctor throughout the procedure. Every step must be precise, as even a small mistake can affect the patient's life.
Beyond providing professional support, the nursing team is also on duty at the patient's bedside 24/7. From nutritional care and personal hygiene to providing emotional support to patients and their families, all require patience, dedication, and a high level of responsibility.
Nursing graduate Vu Van Huy, Head Nurse of the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department at Kien An Hospital, shared: “The pressure on medical staff here comes from many sides. Many patients are admitted in serious condition, and their families don't fully understand the progression and severity of the illness. Therefore, during the care and treatment process, we not only focus on saving lives but also spend a lot of time explaining the patient's condition, each medication, and treatment method in detail so that the patient and their family understand and cooperate better.”
At Hai Phong Eye Hospital, the role of nurses is even more evident because most patients face difficulties in daily life after surgery due to unstable vision. In addition to performing specialized procedures such as changing bandages and monitoring eye recovery, nurses also directly assist patients in their daily activities.
Ms. Vu Thi Minh Nha (Gia Vien ward), who was receiving treatment at Hai Phong Eye Hospital, said: “Upon arriving at the hospital, I was very attentively guided by the doctors and nurses. They took me to each examination room and specifically explained each area so that I wouldn't feel lost. Everything was explained meticulously, making the examination and treatment process much smoother for me.”
According to Ms. Le Thi Anh Dao, Head of the Nursing Department at Hai Phong Eye Hospital, nurses not only perform specialized techniques but also play a crucial role in providing psychological support and creating a sense of reassurance for patients. “In particular, many patients often feel anxious when going for eye examinations or treatment. Therefore, the nursing team always focuses on clearly explaining the patient's condition and treatment process, while also encouraging and building rapport so that patients feel more at ease, thus cooperating well with doctors and nurses during treatment,” Ms. Dao shared.

Aiming for professionalism and humanistic values.
In the context of increasing healthcare needs, the role of nurses is no longer simply about carrying out medical orders, but is increasingly asserting its importance in the modern healthcare system. From professional care and psychological support to accompanying patients throughout their treatment, the nursing team is becoming a crucial link in improving the quality of healthcare services.
At Kien An Hospital, with approximately 700 beds and a large number of inpatients and outpatients, the hospital's management board has identified the nursing staff as the core force in patient care. Ms. Trinh Thi My, Head of the Nursing Department at Kien An Hospital, stated that the hospital has implemented numerous solutions to improve the quality of nursing services. These include standardizing nursing procedures according to the Ministry of Health 's guidelines and hospital quality criteria. Simultaneously, the unit continues to review and refine procedures according to the Ministry of Health's list of technical procedures to ensure consistency, scientific rigor, and suitability for practical treatment.
Not only in general hospitals, but also in many specialized medical facilities in the city, there is a growing focus on building a professional, dedicated, and humane nursing staff. At Hai Phong University Medical Center, a comprehensive patient care model is being implemented in many departments. Nurses not only monitor the patient's condition but also assist with daily activities, provide psychological counseling, and accompany patients throughout their treatment.
According to Master's degree holder Le Van Mang, According to the Head Nurse of the Hai Phong Department of Health, the current demand for patient care is increasing. Patients not only want to be cured but also need comprehensive, attentive, and safe care. Therefore, the city's health sector is aiming to build a professional, standardized, and modern nursing staff.
Nurses not only carry out medical orders but must also proactively coordinate with doctors in monitoring, caring for, and ensuring the safety of patients. “Attitude and communication skills are very important. We aim for a patient-centered care model, in which nurses must know how to listen and empathize to reduce psychological pressure on patients and their families,” Mr. Mang shared.
The healthcare sector in Hai Phong is accelerating digital transformation in nursing, gradually digitizing medical records and professional procedures to reduce paperwork and free up nurses more time for patient care.
