From May 30th, 2026, the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) will officially open with a showdown between the host city Da Nang and the reigning champion, China. This year's DIFF is showing even greater ambition, transforming Da Nang into the stage for a modern fireworks revolution, where technology, music , and storytelling blend together.
On the opening night, host city Da Nang faced the defending champion.
The clash between the Da Nang team (Vietnam) and China on the very first night was seen as the opening salvo for a season where "there is no room for error".
Following their victory at DIFF 2025, the Chinese team returned with "Flower of the Orient," inspired by the folk song "Jasmine Flower," combining smokeless fireworks with soft layers of light that embody the spirit of East Asia. Experts believe this will be a performance that focuses more on visual emotion than on pure technical display.
However, Da Nang's advantage has never lay in winning titles. For many seasons, the home team has always been considered an "unpredictable dark horse" due to their ability to stir up excitement among the audience on their home ground.
With the theme "Nature," the opening showdown promises to be more than just a fireworks display; it's a battle of emotions, identity, and storytelling through light.

France and Vietnam: A dialogue between memory and identity.
While the first night was centered around nature, the second night, with the theme "Heritage," resembled a multi-layered cultural film.
Representing France, Lux Factory POK 2.0 enters DIFF 2026 with the momentum of a top contender after winning Gold Jupiter at Montreal 2025, one of the most prestigious fireworks competitions on the planet.
The French are renowned for their ability to transform fireworks into a cinematic language. The film "Heritage – Da Nang Shines" is revealed as a journey through civilizations, where history doesn't disappear but layers upon itself to create new identities.
On the opposite side, Z121 Vina Pyrotech - Vietnam (runner-up at DIFF 2025) carries the high expectations of the Vietnamese audience. While France possesses a classically poetic European style, the Vietnamese team is expected to create a more modern perspective on national heritage, combining sophisticated techniques with a deep understanding of local culture.

Japan vs. Italy, an early final at DIFF 2026
Perhaps no match has generated more anticipation among fireworks enthusiasts than the showdown between Japan and Italy on the "Culture" night.
On one side is the renowned Hanabi art of Japan, minimalist yet perfect in every detail. On the other is the distinctly Italian cinematic style, rich in emotion and breathtaking like an opera in the sky.
Tamaya Kitahara Fireworks showcases traditional Japanese techniques such as perfectly symmetrical "wari-mono" fireworks and the famous Kamuro effect, where golden rays of light cascade down like the hair of a maiden in ancient Japanese paintings.
Meanwhile, Martarello Group – a "living legend" of DIFF with two consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018 – returns with "Echoes Becoming Future". Over a century of fireworks making has transformed the Italian team into masters of the art of storytelling through light. Many experts call this an "early final" of DIFF 2026.

Germany and Macau: Where Technology Becomes Art
The "Creative" night could be the moment when fireworks technology enters a new level.
The German team Steffes-Ollig Feuerwerke, with a history spanning over 150 years, is renowned for its near-perfect precision in synchronizing fireworks with music. Their "PYROGRAPHICS" display is described as a "living painting," where each beam of light is a brushstroke against the backdrop of the Da Nang sky.
Facing them is Apple Pyrotechnics from Macau (China), a team considered a "giant" of Asian fireworks thanks to their experience organizing national-scale events. Their "Celestial Journey to the West," inspired by Journey to the West, is expected to deliver spectacular water-based fireworks effects with a distinctly Eastern visual appeal.
Australia and Portugal conclude their qualifying campaign with aspirations for the future.
The final night of the qualifying round, themed "Vision," will be a showdown between two completely different schools of thought.
Australia's Skylighter Fireworks chooses a mainstream and emotionally explosive approach, using music by Coldplay, Bon Jovi, and Avicii to tell a story of the aspiration to transcend boundaries.
Meanwhile, Macedos Pirotecnia, the over 90-year-old Portuguese brand, returns after winning the "Most Innovative" award last season. The European team promises to transform light into a symbol of connection and the future, in a performance that is more philosophical than ostentatious.

It's not just fireworks.
What makes DIFF 2026 different is not just the number of "stars" participating. This year's festival shows that the art of fireworks is undergoing a dramatic transformation from purely technical displays to multi-sensory storytelling works where music, programming technology, lighting effects, and audience emotions blend into a complete theatrical experience.
For Da Nang, DIFF is no longer just a summer tourism event, but is gradually becoming a true "Fireworks World Cup" of Asia, where the world's leading nations bring their best to compete along the Han River.
And if all expectations come true, the summer of 2026 could be remembered as the year that DIFF enters its most glorious era in history since its inception.
