During the summer months, a common sight at public swimming pools is children being brought there by their parents to learn to swim. On weekends, the pools are always overcrowded. Many parents say they take advantage of the summer holidays to bring their children to swimming pools for fun and swimming lessons, aiming to equip them with skills to prevent drowning. Although some schools have included swimming in their physical education curriculum, parents want their children to learn more thoroughly, so some even hire private swimming instructors for their children by the hour.
According to World Health Organization statistics from 2023, approximately 2,000 children die from drowning each year in Vietnam. Between 2016 and 2020, over 8.5 million school-aged children received water safety training, resulting in a reduction of approximately 100 drowning deaths per year. Vietnam's child injury prevention program aims to reduce drowning deaths by 10% between 2020 and 2025.
Over the past period, the entire society has joined forces to equip children with skills to prevent drowning. This work has not stopped at one stage but continues to be maintained, even expanded with new approaches from the grassroots level, and has received positive responses. Specifically, in recent days, in summer activities implemented in many localities, equipping children with swimming skills has been one of the main activities, even included as a criterion in the emulation program.
Children are naturally active. Summer coincides with the peak of the rainy season, making it inevitable that they will, driven by a desire for fun, swim in rivers and streams or bathe in the rain, putting themselves in danger. Given this issue, in addition to focusing on equipping children with the skills to identify and avoid dangers, it is essential to strengthen communication efforts to raise their self-awareness and discourage them from participating in unsafe activities, thus preventing unfortunate consequences.
