Reading a book is a journey back in time.

TTH.VN - “Reading a good book is like conversing with the most brilliant people of past centuries” - Dang Nguyen Ngoc Nhi (a 12th-grade student specializing in Literature at Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted) quoted philosopher René Descartes when speaking about the role of books. This is also Nhi's message to many young people on their journey of pursuing reading and seeking knowledge.

Ambassador of Reading Culture Dang Nguyen Ngoc Nhi

Ngoc Nhi was the 2024 Reading Culture Ambassador of Hue , and at the launch ceremony of the 2025 Reading Culture Ambassador competition in Hue City at the end of April, her sharing received praise and positive feedback from all attendees.

Speaking in front of everyone, Nhi believes that surely everyone's memory holds memories of their first books, perhaps fairy tales with fairies and princes, or rhymes learned to spell. Nhi is no exception. From those pages still smelling of fresh paper, you feel as if you've wandered into a magical world , a world that witnessed your own journey of growth.

“Books are not just printed words on paper; they are like a silent storyteller, a patient teacher guiding me to discover countless new things in life. That's how I grew up with the pages of books, and my love for words grew with each passing year. Because of this, I quickly realized the benefits of reading,” Nhi confided.

In her pursuit of reading, Nhi cherishes the quote by philosopher René Descartes: "Reading a good book is like conversing with the greatest minds of past centuries." This quote not only emphasizes the value of knowledge but also suggests a spiritual connection, a communication that transcends all barriers of time and space that reading provides.

It was this spirit that sowed the seeds of Ngoc Nhi's love for literature and reading culture. She reads in many genres and finds value in every page of a book.

Reading books is like taking a journey back in time.

“Reading Nguyen Du’s ‘The Tale of Kieu,’ we converse with a compassionate heart, a profound insight into the fate of humanity in feudal society. Reading Lev Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace,’ we listen to the complex developments of history, the inner turmoil of people facing great upheavals. Each work is a unique ‘voice,’ contributing to the multifaceted symphony of human culture,” Nhi concluded.

Nhi views the journey of pursuing each book as a trip back in time. This journey is an opportunity to "converse" with great minds, noble hearts, and kindred spirits. Through the pages of books, one not only gains knowledge but also nurtures the soul, broadens perspectives, and becomes richer. "Therefore, reading is an essential spiritual need, a beautiful cultural trait that should be cherished and nurtured," Nhi shared.

Sharing more about the role of a young person in the new era, Nhi also expressed her gratitude to the organizations that held competitions related to reading culture. For Nhi, it was not only an opportunity to express her love for books, but also to interact and learn from friends who share the same passion.

"I hope that all of you will consider books as companions on your journey to adulthood, as a universal key to unlocking the door to knowledge and exploring the world," Nhi added, and hoped that the 2025 Reading Culture Ambassador competition would find outstanding individuals who will continue to ignite the passion for reading in each of us.
