Mr Macron advocated strategic autonomy for both Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing cooperation without dependency and defending freedom and sovereignty. He identified common challenges such as revisionist states, terrorism, the erosion of alliances and nuclear proliferation.
Mr. Macron also proposed building a new partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Europe to maintain an open environment and a rules-based order in the region, pooling strength to promote technology, address trade challenges, protect global common interests and affirm universal values to bring balance in difficult times.
According to Mr. Macron, the world will overcome those challenges if it has a common vision and Europe will have to play a bigger role by being more competitive to make its agenda on security strategy and autonomy credible.
Last year, the keynote address marking the launch of the Shangri-La Dialogue was delivered by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Previous keynote speakers include Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese./.
