The Euro is trending lower today. On March 11th, the Eurogroup, comprising finance ministers of the Eurozone, agreed that a slight tightening of fiscal policy in 2025 is appropriate, given the current macroeconomic outlook, the need to strengthen fiscal sustainability, and to continue consolidating the ongoing process of reducing inflation.
In a joint statement issued at the end of the Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, Belgium, the ministers stressed the need to maintain policy flexibility in the face of current uncertainties.
The ministers affirmed their commitment to continuing ambitious structural reforms, maintaining and increasing investment where appropriate, including in common priority areas such as green and digital transformation, as well as defense capabilities funded by national and EU sources such as the Stability and Recovery Mechanism.
The group also unanimously committed to improving the efficiency, quality, and structure of public spending.
In addition, Eurozone finance ministers also said they would gradually phase out energy support measures implemented in 2022 and 2023 to help cope with rising energy prices, using savings from these measures to reduce budget deficits.
Regarding the outlook, the ministers assessed that although the regional economy entered 2024 on a weak foundation, there are still conditions to boost regional economic growth in 2025.
Notably, Eurozone finance ministers reached an agreement to accelerate the implementation of the Capital Market Union.
