On May 23rd, a special Doraemon animated episode titled "A Birthday Gift: A Trip to Vietnam" was screened in Japan and attracted the attention of many viewers, especially fans in Vietnam.
The approximately 11-minute episode opens with Shizuka expressing her wish to one day visit Vietnam and participate in the lantern festival in Hoi An. Immediately afterward, Nobita promises to take her to Vietnam as a birthday gift for his best friend. He plans to ask Doraemon to use the magic door to explore the country, but the gadget is currently being repaired. Finally, with Daremi's help, the group manages to make their plan a reality.
The first destination for the quartet of Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka, and Doremi was Hanoi, the capital city. They strolled around Ho Guom Lake, admired the bustling streets, and then stopped at a shop to try on Vietnamese traditional clothing. Shizuka and Doremi looked lovely and charming in their ao dai dresses, while Doraemon and Nobita wore conical hats. Everyone excitedly began their journey to explore the next landmarks.

The group was overwhelmed by the stunning natural scenery of Ha Long Bay, took souvenir photos at the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office, admired the Dragon Bridge (Da Nang), and finally arrived at their dream destination: Hoi An ancient town.
The four characters enjoyed the magical, bustling cityscape illuminated by lights, and the colorful lanterns released onto the Hoai River. Throughout the journey, Doremi acted as a tour guide, providing everyone with general information about each destination.
Doraemon and his friends' trip was made even more complete when they got to enjoy many Vietnamese specialties: banh mi, com tam, cao lau... The whole group ate with excitement and delight, constantly exclaiming, "It's so delicious!" in Vietnamese.
Upon its release, this special episode quickly garnered significant attention from Vietnamese viewers. On social media, many fans shared images that vividly captured Vietnamese culture within the "Doraemon universe." Characteristic details such as bustling streets filled with motorbikes, sidewalk eateries with plastic tables and chairs, and street food stalls were scrutinized and praised by netizens for the creative team's efforts in incorporating Vietnamese imagery into the animated world. Additionally, many viewers expressed regret that Suneo and Jaian did not appear on this special trip.

The Doraemon manga and anime series are popular in Japan, Vietnam, and many other countries around the world. Doraemon was even appointed as Japan's first Anime Ambassador in 2008.

The Doraemon manga and anime series have a huge fan base in Vietnam. Besides the recently released film set in Vietnam, the animated film Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle Under the Sea (Doraemon Movie 45) is currently a box office sensation in Vietnam. The film attracted a large audience from early screenings before its official release on May 22nd and has currently grossed over 88 billion VND (according to Box Office Vietnam data ).
