African tourism is booming.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), after suffering a severe impact from the Covid-19 pandemic, international tourism in Africa is on the road to recovery, and the first quarter of 2024 has returned to pre-crisis growth levels.

In the first quarter of this year, Africa saw a 5% increase in international visitors compared to the same period in 2019, and a 13% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023. This positive growth has put the continent back on an upward trajectory after reaching 96% of pre-pandemic recovery levels by 2023. Several countries performed exceptionally well, exceeding the continent's average, including Tanzania, Morocco, and Algeria.

According to UNWTO data, North Africa recorded the best performance in the first quarter with 23% more international visitors compared to the first quarter of 2019, followed by Central America with a 15% increase, and the Caribbean and Western Europe, each with a 7% increase. However, in Africa, the recovery of international tourism is showing an uneven trend between the growth rate of visitors and revenue. This disparity can be explained by factors such as average length of stay, average spending per visitor, and customer demographics.
