Life blossoms from lives that have ended.

On May 20th, amidst the deeply moving atmosphere of the National Organ and Tissue Donation Day, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra attended and personally signed the registration form for organ and tissue donation.

Speaking emotionally at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra said: “Organ donation is not just a medical act; it is the noblest act of humanity, reflecting a beautiful philosophy of life: 'Giving is forever.' When one life ends, many other lives are opened. Each donated organ is a ray of hope, a new life is revived, and a family finds boundless happiness.”

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra assessed that, over the past 30 years, the Vietnamese health sector has continuously strived to master the most advanced organ transplantation techniques. From the first kidney transplant to the present day, with the intelligence and dedication of Vietnamese doctors, the health sector has achieved miraculous progress, mastering most of the most complex organ transplantation techniques such as heart, liver, lung, and pancreas transplants. Nearly 11,000 successful organ transplants have been performed, saving tens of thousands of patients who were thought to have no chance of survival.

Behind the miracles of Vietnamese medicine in general lies the dedication and talent of Vietnamese doctors in particular; and also the silent and incredibly noble sacrifice of organ donors and their families. It is they who continue to write the miracle of life through compassion and love for humanity.

Expressing profound gratitude and sincere appreciation to all those who have donated organs and tissues, and to those who have passed away but still left a part of their bodies to continue living beautifully in this world, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra emotionally stated: “These fathers, mothers, wives, husbands, and families have overcome the greatest pain of loss to make an extremely humane, progressive, and civilized decision. In their most sorrowful moments, they thought of saving the lives of others. That is a silent, invaluable sacrifice, the most beautiful expression of compassion and humanity.”

“Currently, the need for organ transplantation is still very great and increasing. Right now, thousands of patients are waiting for organ transplants every day. There are young children hoping for a healthy heart so they can go to school, grow up with their families, and have fun with their friends. There are young fathers and mothers, and many others, who just wish for more time to live; and there are patients who cannot wait for a chance to live. This reminds us that every organ donation application today can become a ray of hope for many people tomorrow,” Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra shared.

Improving policies and enhancing organ transplantation capacity.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan emphasized: "Currently, Vietnam's organ transplantation level is proudly considered to be on par with many advanced countries in the region. By 2025, the whole country will have 10,878 transplant cases, including 1,212 cases in 2024 and 1,368 cases in 2025. To date, there have been 286 cases of brain-dead organ donation nationwide."

The health sector also focuses on investing in infrastructure, training human resources, and transferring technology to major hospitals nationwide. From having only a few facilities performing organ transplants, there are now 34 hospitals nationwide with licenses to perform transplants.

Thanks to intensified communication efforts, the number of brain-dead individuals has changed significantly; for example, there were 41 organ donations in 2024 and 66 in 2025; and since the beginning of 2026, there have been 25 brain-dead organ donations nationwide.

According to Minister Dao Hong Lan, the Ministry of Health has issued Circular No. 48/2024 on regulations regarding registration for transplantation and the principles for coordinating the procurement and transplantation of tissues and organs from deceased donors. The Ministry is currently amending and supplementing the Law on Donation, Procurement, and Transplantation of Human Tissues and Organs, and Donation and Procurement of Cadavers, with the goal of expanding the source of donations, improving management efficiency, and aligning with international practices; contributing to the concretization of these policies and guidelines, while also creating momentum for all levels, sectors, and society as a whole to work together.

The Ministry of Health also pledges to use every donated tissue and organ in the most respectful, transparent, and effective way possible; ensuring that no act of generosity is wasted and no hope is overlooked.

In addition, the Ministry of Health continues to improve the professional system; directs hospitals and medical facilities to enhance their capacity to receive, preserve, and transplant organs; and expands the network of organ donation counseling units in all hospitals with intensive care units, in order to promptly detect and mobilize organ sources from brain-dead individuals.

Furthermore, by promoting digital transformation and transparency, the national organ transplant waiting list management and coordination software system will operate on the principle of absolute fairness and objectivity. Every citizen, regardless of location or status, who has a need and meets medical criteria, will have an equal opportunity to receive an organ transplant.

“The health sector will also coordinate with relevant agencies to improve healthcare policies, honor organ donors and their families. We consider the families of organ donors as close members of the sector, always giving them the best care and support,” Minister Dao Hong Lan emphasized.

At the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra also called on officials, soldiers, all youth union members, business organizations, and every family and every Vietnamese citizen to join hands in strongly spreading the organ donation movement with compassionate hearts, sharing, and sacred national and fraternal love.

"With the fine traditions of our nation, I believe that the organ donation movement will spread even more strongly, contributing to building a modern, humane Vietnamese medical system and for the happy lives of all people," Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra shared.
