Da Nang tourism is back on track.

During the two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, Da Nang's tourism industry did not rest but quietly prepared new products, and its impressive comeback recently shows that Da Nang remains a tourism hub in Central Vietnam.

It can be said that tourism is a key economic sector that has recovered quickly, strongly, and impressively in Da Nang City since reopening after Covid-19.

The Son Tra Peninsula is being preserved and developed in harmony with nature.

Many new products

During the recent April 30th - May 1st holiday, the city welcomed over 254,000 visitors, mainly domestic tourists (over 246,600), an increase of more than 3.3 times compared to the same period in 2021.

Specifically, Sun World Ba Na Hills tourist area attracted a 55% increase in visitors compared to the same period in 2021. The Marble Mountains National Special Monument welcomed approximately 13,000 visitors, and Asia Park also attracted over 300% more visitors compared to the same period last year.

Assistance for tourists visiting Da Nang

On international routes, with flights from Thailand and Singapore resuming to Da Nang, travel agencies are quickly connecting with foreign partners with the determination to bring the city back to its peak level in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic, with 8.6 million tourists, including 3.5 million international visitors.

This is seen as a "quick test" for the city's tourism industry and shows that Da Nang is still maintaining its performance as before the pandemic.

Returning to Da Nang this time, tourist Ha Thi Dieu (44 years old, residing in Dong Da District, Hanoi) was surprised by the new tourism products. Da Nang beach was no stranger to her family even before Covid-19; she swam there almost every year. But this year, the whole family gathered at My An beach at night, enjoying street art on the An Thuong pedestrian street – the "Western Street". Here, there are services such as food trucks, soft drinks, therapeutic massage, team building, bonfires, bartender performances... beach movie screenings and nightly events, music, and DJ performances…

Da Nang's coastal tourism has the advantage of still preserving the traditional culture of its fishing villages.

My An Night Beach, An Thuong Walking Street - Western Street, and soon Bach Dang Walking Street - Night Market… are new tourism products included in Da Nang City's night-time economy development strategy until 2025.

According to Ms. Truong Thi Hong Hanh, Director of the Da Nang City Department of Tourism, over the past two years, the city and the tourism industry have made continuous efforts to prepare for a comprehensive comeback, with many special events such as: the Asian Air Route Development Forum - Routers Asia; the Asian Development Golf Tournament; the Enjoy Summer Festival, the VITM Tourism Fair… and many major tourism stimulus programs, effectively implementing MICE policies. The tourism capital of Central Vietnam is gradually regaining its position, with strong determination and innovative approaches, to become the focal point of Vietnamese tourism.

Water sports remain a fresh feature of Da Nang's beaches.

The city will also host many major international cultural, tourism, and sporting events in the near future, such as the Asian Air Route Development Forum and the 2022 Asian Golf Championship…

“The number of visitors during the recent holiday period shows that Da Nang's tourism industry has shown real signs of recovery, which are positive indicators for the upcoming vibrant summer tourist season, and also open up new opportunities in attracting international tourists during the peak season from September to the beginning of next year,” Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, Chairman of Sun Group in Central Vietnam, confidently stated.

Businesses have also prepared products for this year's summer tourism season, focusing mainly on package deals to stimulate demand, and products for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourists.

Tourists love Da Nang's beaches.

Maintaining Da Nang's position

According to the tourism industry's assessment, by 2019, tourism had essentially become a key economic sector, meeting six basic evaluation criteria. In particular, the city's tourism industry achieved a high level of tourist satisfaction through awards and tourism survey results such as: the Leading Event and Festival Destination in Asia award in 2016, Top 10 leading meeting cities in Asia in 2017; Top trending destination choice in 2018, Top 52 destinations in 2019; Top 10 global destinations in 2020; Top 25 most popular destinations in Asia in 2021…

Mr. Tran Phuoc Son, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee, said that with the policy of flexibly adapting to the epidemic to restore and promote economic development, tourism is one of the key areas that the city is particularly interested in promoting to restore as soon as possible.

"Da Nang has the advantage of being a city situated between the sea and the river, so after the sea, the city is focusing on exploiting and promoting waterway tourism, creating new tourism products such as tours and routes on the sea and river, diversifying entertainment activities, and encouraging tourists to stay longer," said Mr. Tran Phuoc Son.

Ms. Truong Thi Hong Hanh added that, right from the reopening, the city has implemented comprehensive and effective policies and solutions. “Initially, the department will work with other departments, agencies, localities, and business associations and communities to promote the market, restore domestic and international flights; and implement policies and support to connect tourism service providers to form alliances to stimulate demand, exploit key and potential markets with various customer segments. At the same time, we will also closely monitor prices, prepare human resources, improve service quality, and maintain the city's established image as a destination…”, Ms. Hanh said.

Mr. Cao Tri Dung, Chairman of the Da Nang Tourism Association, believes that despite strong competition from neighboring localities, Da Nang still has its own unique appeal to domestic tourists. Based on the positive signs from recent holidays and the efforts of the city and businesses, it is expected that this summer Da Nang will catch up with the peak season for domestic tourists in 2019.

Opportunities for resort real estate

Besides launching new products, the Da Nang City Department of Tourism also has a longer-term, systematic strategy to attract tourists, particularly MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourists.

It can be said that not every destination offers event organizers as many advantages as Da Nang City. The city's tourism industry has special policies to support MICE groups, such as city and department leaders welcoming them at the airport, providing escort vehicles, and supporting the event…

Mr. Nguyen Duc Quynh, General Director of Furama Resort and Chairman of the Da Nang Hotel Association, cited that during the summer of 2022, the Ariyana International Convention Center in Da Nang hosted more than 10 conferences with over 1,000 attendees per event, demonstrating that Da Nang remains an ideal destination for domestic MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) groups.

With Da Nang's focus on developing MICE tourism, many opportunities have opened up for investors to develop resort real estate. In 2021, the city had 1,272 accommodation establishments with 44,810 rooms, including 216 establishments of 3-5 stars and equivalent with 26,822 rooms, accounting for about 60%, and 16 tourist attractions.

Da Nang City is aiming to host international events to open up more channels for attracting tourists.

Meanwhile, immediately after the recovery of post-Covid-19 activities, a series of projects have been restarted to anticipate the new development cycle of tourism in Da Nang City until 2025.

“Da Nang has all the exciting and unique features that MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) travelers need: event facilities, diverse entertainment destinations, convenient domestic flights connecting many provinces and cities, and international travel companies in Da Nang have developed service networks in various provinces and cities, creating a more diverse customer ecosystem. Da Nang was also honored as “Asia’s Leading Festival and Event Destination” by the World Travel Awards (WTA), and especially after APEC 2017, major international corporations decided to hold events here,” Mr. Duc Quynh said.

From now until October 2022, seven more airlines will operate international routes from South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and India, with approximately 90 flights per week, including an expected 49 flights per week from South Korea. Domestic routes from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot, Can Tho, Da Lat, Hai Phong, Phu Quoc, and Vinh will also increase to over 230 flights per week.
