Adapting to local “weather culture”
In mid-2016, Mr. Le Quoc Viet, head of the Quang Destination Club, and his family left Hanoi and moved to Hoi An and Da Nang. After nearly ten years of running a tourism business in the Central region, going through big and small storms and floods, he gradually learned to adapt and gained a lot of experience in operating accommodation facilities during the rainy and stormy season.
“Doing tourism is not only a journey of adapting to trends and markets, but also requires harmony and adaptation to local culture, including “weather culture”. Tourism businesses and accommodation establishments always need to be prepared to deal with storms and floods.
Especially for small homestays where the host is not always present, there should be a detailed instruction board on how to handle emergencies. Prepare storm-proof items and reserve clean water so that guests can use it immediately when needed. Plan to store food and supplies, prioritizing vegetables, fruits, and dry ingredients to last from a few days to a week,” Mr. Viet shared.
He also emphasized that tourist establishments need to regularly update honest weather information for tourists: “Customers will carefully consider whether to still arrive or check-out early and create conditions for them to cancel/refund free of charge, reassure and inform them about the careful preparation of the accommodation unit to give them peace of mind. In emergency situations, evacuate guests early to ensure the safety of guests and help the establishment owner easily focus on handling and protecting property.”
In order for rescue and support for tourists to take place promptly and effectively, Mr. Viet suggested building and forming community response teams/groups within the population and accommodation and tourism businesses to proactively grasp information and needs, and be ready to join forces to support and help each other in natural disasters, promptly mobilizing on-site solutions.
As for tourists, preparation and calmness are the most important factors. That is the opinion of Mr. Dao Dang Cong Trung, a sports coach, underwater tour guide, who regularly participates in rescue and support for people and tourists during floods in Da Nang.
“When there is a warning of heavy rain or rising water, you need to stay calm, follow the instructions of the hotel or local authorities, and not travel by personal vehicle without fully understanding the situation. In emergency situations, guests need to keep in touch with tour representatives, tour guides or diplomatic agencies, and equip themselves with some basic survival skills such as swimming, using life jackets, keeping warm, finding floating objects to protect themselves when necessary...”, Mr. Trung advised.
Rainy and stormy days are no longer "low season"
According to information from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang, in the face of complicated weather conditions, the city's tourism industry has coordinated with relevant agencies and units to guide accommodation establishments to proactively deploy many timely support solutions, ensuring the highest safety for tourists in rain, storms and floods.
The Department also developed a backup plan and compiled a list of qualified and safe accommodation establishments to welcome guests when necessary; many accommodation establishments support room discounts of 20%-70%, some even offer free rooms to tourists.
During the storms and floods that lasted from late October to early November, the department closely coordinated with local authorities, rescue forces and accommodation facilities to organize vehicles to promptly evacuate visitors from deep flooded areas. Information was continuously updated via the hotline of the Visitor Support Center and the multi-platform online communication system to quickly receive and support visitors in all emergency situations.
In order to minimize the adverse effects of the weather, the Da Nang tourism industry has also quickly implemented flexible plans and programs to both respond to natural disasters and restore tourism activities, continue to promote and attract visitors in the last months of the year. The city is oriented to focus on indoor tourism products suitable for the rainy and stormy season, such as Da Nang Food Tour, visiting museums, galleries, enjoying art, shows... so that visitors have many options to experience, convenient and safe even in unfavorable weather conditions.
In addition, the city is also researching and implementing a number of creative and civilized post-storm reconstruction activities with the participation of the community, tourists, international experts, etc., such as clean-up programs, landscape restoration, and socially responsible tourism activities, which not only bring practical value to the community but also create meaningful and humane experiences for tourists.
In October 2025, the number of visitors staying in Da Nang is estimated to reach more than 1.3 million, an increase of more than 25% over the same period in 2024, of which international visitors reached about 614 thousand, higher than the previous month and an increase of more than 28% over the same period in 2024. This data shows that rainy and stormy days are no longer the "low season" of tourism in the city. When each tourism business has a response plan, each tourist equips himself with knowledge and calmly accompanies the destination, trust and mutual support will become the core driving force for sustainable tourism development.
