Mr. Phan Van Quang, Head of the Technology Department of the Dong Thap Provincial Department of Science and Technology, shared that the ornamental flower industry in Dong Thap is currently reorganized into a cooperative and linked production model, gradually building and perfecting the ornamental flower production chain, supplying nationwide. In addition, technology has permeated the production process; farmers have applied advanced scientific and technological achievements such as transferring new varieties, using greenhouses and net houses, automatic irrigation systems, and using tissue-cultured seedlings, etc., to improve the quality of ornamental flower products and reduce production costs.
Moreover, ornamental plants maximize their value by leveraging cultural elements combined with ecotourism, resort tourism, and agricultural experience tourism. Local tourist destinations have emerged and become famous throughout the country, such as Happy Land Hung Thy amusement park, Hoa Ech House Homestay, Ngoc Lan Ornamental Garden, Sa Nhien Garden, Tu Ton Rose Garden, Sa Dec Ornamental Plant Tourist Area, and Mien Tay Lodge Tourist Area… attracting millions of domestic and international tourists.
Furthermore, Sa Dec Flower Village has been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) to implement a model project, promoting multi-valued tourism that meets the criteria for evaluating tourism products within the OCOP product criteria. This achievement is a bright spot in the landscape of eco-agricultural tourism, supporting the Sa Dec flower and ornamental plant industry to increase its competitiveness in the market and affirming the position of Sa Dec Flower Village in the Mekong Delta region and nationwide.

To improve the quality of ornamental plants, it's not enough to simply produce them using traditional methods. Ornamental plant farmers also need to update their knowledge and apply advanced technologies to their production. Dr. Nguyen Huu Hoang, from the Center for Research and Application of High Technology in Agriculture, Ho Chi Minh City University of Science, stated that the trade of high-tech ornamental plants is currently being promoted and developed in many global markets.
For example, the US is also increasing trade with Europe, or Thailand is applying high technology to the production of ornamental flowers and exporting them to Vietnam. Given these trends, it is inevitable that ornamental flower farmers in Dong Thap province are ready to apply biotechnology and introduce biological products into mass production. The application of biotechnology helps farmers increase productivity, maximize control over cultivation processes, and minimize damage from natural disasters and climate change.
This application will help ornamental flower farmers in Dong Thap province move towards sustainable, chemical-free production that meets stringent global standards. Besides biological products, the development of smart farms with plant-based factory models or solar-powered farms allows farmers to produce large quantities of plant biomass in a short time and on a small area, while ensuring sufficient solar energy for optimal photosynthesis, supporting the growth and development of ornamental flowers.
Sustainable production is always linked to the consumer market. This is a closed value chain of the agricultural sector in general, and the ornamental flower industry of Dong Thap in particular. Dong Thap ornamental flowers have reached many markets around the world. Dong Thap province aims for a production value of 6,000 billion VND in the ornamental flower industry by 2026; the total area for ornamental flower cultivation in the province will reach over 4,000 hectares, according to Mr. Phan Van Quang.

To achieve this goal, Dong Thap province is also cooperating with the Netherlands Agricultural Business Cooperation Association in promoting Dong Thap's ornamental flower products to the European market. Ms. Mai Thi Hong, Vice President of the Netherlands Agricultural Business Cooperation Association, stated that the Dutch flower market is estimated to be worth approximately US$5.1 billion in 2025, and is projected to reach US$6.4 billion by 2023. The growth rate of ornamental flower consumption is forecast at around 4.7%. The Netherlands maintains its important position in the global flower industry with 1.7 billion flower stems annually, accounting for 60% of global flower trade, affirming its status as the "Silicon Valley of the global flower industry".
Ms. Mai Thi Hong assessed that the flower and ornamental plant industry in Vietnam in general, and Dong Thap in particular, has great potential and prospects for development in the future. With many favorable factors such as climate, an increasing international consumer market oriented towards green and environmentally friendly products, and the development of e-commerce, these are favorable criteria for the flower and ornamental plant industry in Dong Thap province to experience stronger sales in the coming time.

According to the Department of Science and Technology of Dong Thap province, in implementing the restructuring of the agricultural sector, Dong Thap province has selected the ornamental flower industry as one of five key sectors playing a crucial role in creating breakthrough momentum in the development of the local agricultural economy, increasing added value, and making a positive contribution to growth and sustainable development. After restructuring the agricultural sectors, specifically for the ornamental flower industry, the entire province currently has nearly 3,603 hectares of production area with more than 2,000 varieties. To date, the total production value of the ornamental flower industry is estimated at 4,595 billion VND.
