From June onwards, the National Health Service (NHS) in England will begin using the subcutaneous injection of Nivolumab (Opdivo) to treat 15 types of cancer, making the UK the first European country to use this injection.
Nivolumab is a cancer treatment drug that uses immunotherapy by blocking a protein that interferes with the immune system's normal functioning, while simultaneously attacking cancer cells and helping the immune system find and destroy them.
Previously, Nivolumab was used in cancer treatment via intravenous infusion, with a treatment time of 30-60 minutes. But with subcutaneous injection, the treatment only takes 3-5 minutes for the patient.
NHS England says that treatment with the Nivolumab injection will save doctors around 1,000 hours per month in treating cancer patients. The NHS typically treats around 1,200 patients with various types of cancer.
Professor Peter Johnson, national clinical director of oncology at NHS England, said the new treatment could be used for 15 types of cancer, including lung, bowel, kidney, bladder, esophageal, skin, head and neck cancer.
The use of Nivolumab injections frees up valuable time for clinicians, enabling the treatment of more patients and enhancing the capacity of hospitals.
According to clinical pharmacist and national consultant on cancer treatment, James Richardson, this effective and rapid treatment method represents a significant advance in cancer treatment and helps improve the lives of thousands of patients each month.
