The 2nd Hanoi Open Pool Championship (9-ball billiards) 2024 will take place from October 8th to 13th at the My Dinh Indoor Athletics Stadium. After his first absence, Duong Quoc Hoang is having great success. The player born in 1987 won all three matches in the qualifying round to secure a place in the top 64 players.
Along with Duong Quoc Hoang, seven other Vietnamese players advanced to the next round: Bui Truong An, Luong Duc Thien, Lo Van Xuan, Nguyen Dang Tuyen, Nguyen Duc Thang, Nguyen Cong Thanh, and Nguyen Van Huynh. The two players Nguyen Anh Tuan – Tkon and Pham Phuong Nam were the most disappointing, having to stop their journey despite high expectations before the tournament.
Duong Quoc Hoang has been consistently achieving impressive victories.
Notably, several highly-rated international players at the Hanoi Open Pool 2024 did not perform successfully. Two prominent examples are Eklent Kaci (Albania) and Viktor Zielinski (Poland). Eklent Kaci lost to Lo Ho Sum of Hong Kong 6-9 in the match that determined his place in the knockout round. Meanwhile, the young Polish talent Viktor Zielinski, in his first time competing in Vietnam, also failed to advance beyond the qualifying round.
After the conclusion of the competition day on October 10th, the organizers drew the pairings for the Round of 64. There was good news as there were no all-Vietnamese pairings. Among them, the top hope, Duong Quoc Hoang, will face Dean Shield (England). Considering both reputation and skill, Duong Quoc Hoang is considered the stronger player, and experts predict he will have little difficulty securing his place in the next round.
Furthermore, the draw results give Vietnamese fans hope that the host country will have a representative who goes further in this year's Hanoi Open Pool. In the first year, only 6 home players made it to the round of 64, including familiar names like Nguyen Tuan Anh, Bui Truong An, Luong Duc Thien, Ngo Quang Trung, Pham Phuong Nam, and Lo Van Xuan, and none of them could reach the round of 32.
Meanwhile, the two matches between Fedor Gorst (USA) and James Aranas (Philippines), and Shane Van Boening (USA) and Mickey Krause (Denmark) are considered the highlights. In addition, the two matches between defending champion Jayson Shaw (Scotland) and fellow Scottish player Landon Hollingsworth, and Peri Open champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (Spain) and Raymund Faraon (Philippines) are also highly anticipated.
Luong Duc Thien will not face much difficulty in the round of 64 of the tournament.
Fedor Gorst (USA) faces a tough opponent in James Aranas.
The Round of 64 matches of the Hanoi Open Pool 2024 will begin at 10:00 AM on October 11th.
Also on October 11th, the U.17 age group (born in 2007 or later), comprising 64 players (40 Vietnamese and 24 international players), will begin competing at the Hanoi Junior Open 2024. This is part of a strategy to develop and discover young pool talents in Asia and Vietnam. Simultaneously, the Hanoi Junior Open 2024 serves as a stepping stone for young players to experience an international tournament and prepare to reach a higher level. The Hanoi Junior Open has a total prize pool of $10,000 and will take place over two days, October 11th and 12th.
