Jhon Duran once shone while playing for Aston Villa. |
Modern football is full of unpredictable twists and turns. But Jhon Duran's journey over the past year or so has left many feeling more regret than blame.
Not long ago, the Colombian striker was one of the most sought-after young players in the Premier League.
At Aston Villa, Duran wasn't a regular starter. However, he made a very special impact in his role as a "super substitute." His speed, strength, explosiveness, and ability to create breakthroughs made him an extremely troublesome substitute.
That was also the time when many big clubs in Europe started paying attention to Duran. Then everything changed so quickly.
At the age of 22, Duran rejected offers from Europe to join Al-Nassr with a salary of around 20 million euros per season. Financially, it was clearly a huge step. But professionally, that decision quickly raised too many questions.
Just six months after spending €75 million to sign Duran, Al-Nassr loaned him to Fenerbahce. A young player usually needs stability to develop. Duran, however, has once again fallen into a cycle of constant transfers.
In Türkiye, the Colombian striker scored 5 goals in 21 matches. That's not a bad number for a young player who needs time to adapt. However, that performance was clearly not enough to convince Al-Nassr. In February 2026, the Saudi Arabian team terminated the loan agreement with Fenerbahce and sent Duran to Zenit.
In a short period of time, the striker moved through Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and then Russia. Each place offered a different football environment, a different pace, and a different tactical system.
It wasn't an ideal journey for a player who was only 22 years old. The most regrettable thing is that Duran once had a very clear position at Aston Villa.
The Premier League is tough, but it's also the environment where young players can mature the fastest if they're competitive enough. Duran once showed he could make an impact in that league. He had a place in the team, a high transfer value, and attracted interest from many big clubs. But Duran left that path too soon.

John Duran's career is now in decline. |
No one has the right to judge a player's financial choices. Professional football always involves decisions related to money and personal future. However, Duran's story once again shows that career development at a young age is sometimes just as important as the numbers on a contract.
Top-level football requires more than just talent. It also demands patience, consistency, and a suitable environment for young players to develop step by step. Duran seems to have lost that after leaving Aston Villa.
At Zenit, he only played 9 games before leaving the team "for personal reasons". By May 2026, the Colombian national team coach confirmed that Duran would not participate in the World Cup. It was a sad end to a period of rapid decline.
From being one of Colombia's most promising talents, Duran has now become a prime example of a career that went astray at a very young age.
What's regrettable isn't Duran's failure at any particular club. The most regrettable thing is the feeling that he lost his path of development too soon, when he should have still been progressing.
