Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated for a second term as President of the European Commission.
As part of the agreement for Ursula von der Leyen to continue as President of the European Commission for a second term, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will become the High Commissioner for Foreign Policy and Security, while former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has been nominated for the position of President of the European Council.
These three names will be presented to EU leaders attending the summit from June 27 in Brussels, Belgium, for a vote. Approval is expected to proceed easily.
Politico, citing five unnamed senior officials, reported that the six EU leaders participating in these personnel negotiations are Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk (representing the European People's Party), Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (representing the socialist group), French President Emmanuel Macron, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte (representing the liberals).
An unnamed official told Politico that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is unhappy at still being excluded from the negotiating effort, even though the far-right now holds the third-largest position after the European Parliament elections.
Meloni's exclusion from negotiations on June 25 was due to the need for all parties to comply with the conditions set by liberal and center-left organizations. These two groups declared they would refuse to support von der Leyen for a second term if she reached an agreement with the Italian leader.
Nevertheless, Italy is predicted to win a key seat in the European Commission's term (2024-2029).
