The EU announced that it has placed 10 members of the Hamas Politburo – the Palestinian movement's highest political leadership body – on a travel ban and asset freeze list, prohibiting direct or indirect provision of funds or economic resources to those named on the list.

Those named on the EU sanctions list include: Nizar Mohammed Awadallah, Mohammad Nazzal, Husam Badran, Khaled Mashal, Khalil Al-Hayya, Muhammad Ismail Darwish, Zaher Jabarin, Abu Khalil Al-Quds, Fathi Hamad and Moussa Abu Marzouk.

A press release stated: "As decision-makers within the organization, members of the Hamas Politburo were well aware of the planning, preparation, and execution of the group's violent acts. These individuals actively defended and justified these violent acts, frequently issuing public warnings and threats of future attacks."

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to helping ensure lasting peace in Gaza – an area devastated by the bloody conflict with Israel that began after Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

"The disarmament of Hamas is a prerequisite and essential condition for making progress in this direction," according to the EU.

In a separate statement, the United Nations Security Council announced sanctions against four entities and three individuals. According to the Security Council, these entities and individuals are Israeli settlers and organizations supporting them for serious and systematic human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Earlier this week, Israel announced that its forces had killed Mohammed Odeh, the new leader of Hamas's military wing. Odeh is believed to have taken over as head of the Al-Qassam Brigades following the death of his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, in early May. According to the Israeli military, he was the target of an attack on Gaza City after months of intelligence and surveillance.
