The trading session last night and early morning of May 17 witnessed a sharp decline in coffee prices on both the London and New York exchanges. The $5,000/ton mark, which was expected to be set in May, is now far away as the market is covered in red.

Specifically, on the London floor, the delivery terms for July and September 2025 both fell sharply by 106 and 100 USD/ton, down to 4,865 and 4,860 USD/ton, respectively.

Further maturities were not immune to the correction. November 2025 delivery fell $88 to $4,830 a tonne, while January 2026 delivery fell $78 to $4,754 a tonne.

On the New York Stock Exchange (USA), Arabica coffee prices also fell simultaneously. The July 2025 contract lost up to 210 USD/ton, equivalent to a decrease of 2.09% to 2.48%, bringing the price down to 8,060 USD/ton.

Industry experts say the drop is not surprising. May is the month when Brazil begins harvesting Robusta coffee (also known as Conilon), which greatly increases supply to the global market.

This year, weather conditions in major coffee growing regions of Brazil are considered favorable, helping to speed up the harvest, contributing to downward pressure on prices on the international market.

Long-term investment in coffee, less dependence on price

Furthermore, coffee prices have increased too much recently, 2-3 times higher than before, so we have to consider the time when prices will cool down according to the rules of many other agricultural products.

Coffee prices fluctuate unpredictably, so sustainable coffee farming requires a long-term vision and in-depth investment strategy including improving the quality of raw materials and promoting processing.

Today, the "Honoring Vietnamese Coffee and Tea for the 3rd time" festival organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper officially took place at Gigamall Trade Center (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) and lasted until 9:00 p.m. on May 18 with many attractive activities: bartending demonstration, experiencing a variety of different coffee and tea products, connecting businesses, specialized seminars, ...

The event is an opportunity for producers, farmers and consumers to look back on the development journey of the Vietnamese coffee and tea industry, and at the same time open up a more sustainable direction in the future.
