Challenges of exporting Vietnamese durian and new directions from the agricultural business club

At the event announcing the establishment of the Vietnam Agricultural Business Club, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, shared the current difficulties in the durian export industry. According to him, in the first 5 months of 2025, durian export turnover reached only under 300 million USD, down more than 60% compared to the same period last year. This decline has strongly affected the domestic market, especially in Dong Nai - where the durian harvest is in progress. The price of Ri6 durian at the garden has dropped sharply to 30,000-32,000 VND/kg, only half of the previous month, due to traders limiting purchases.

The main reason, according to Mr. Nguyen, is that the Chinese market – the main export market – is facing obstacles. Some durian shipments are being returned because they do not meet the requirements for handling cadmium residue, a toxic heavy metal. This problem has put export activities in a passive position.

In that context, Mr. Le Phong Hai, Vice President of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, emphasized that if technical issues are not thoroughly resolved, the risk of returned goods will continue, affecting the durian industry in the long term. Mr. Hai said that the Vietnam Farmers' Association was established to support the agricultural sector in overcoming challenges. The club not only connects stakeholders in the agricultural value chain (including management agencies, farmers, production enterprises, investors, scientific experts and insurers) but also promotes the application of technology and science to meet the strict standards of the international market, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products.
