Update world steel prices
At the opening of the trading session on May 19, the price of steel rebar for June delivery on the Shanghai Stock Exchange remained flat at around 3,072 yuan/ton. On the Dalian Stock Exchange, the price of iron ore for May delivery edged up slightly to 800 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore on the Singapore Stock Exchange decreased by 0.4 USD to 100.2 USD/ton.
In the first four months of the year, Ukrainian steelmakers reduced exports of semi-finished steel products to 440.04 thousand tons, down 24.6% compared to the same period in 2024, according to GMK Center. However, deliveries to Egypt have not been made since January, and products began to be exported to Poland only in March.
In April this year, Ukrainian steel companies exported 145.83 thousand tons of semi-finished steel, up 56% compared to the previous month and up 10.4% compared to March 2024. This is the highest level since September last year.
Total export revenue fell 25.3% year-on-year to $215.29 million in the four months. However, in April, revenue increased 14.5% year-on-year and 68.5% month-on-month to $76.9 million.
In another development, the European Union (EU) increased its greenhouse gas emissions by 2.2% in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 – reaching 897 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, according to Eurostat. During the same period, the EU's GDP increased by 1.5% compared to the same period last year, according to GMK Center.
The largest increase in emissions was recorded in the energy and gas supply sector, up 4.6% year-on-year, and the household sector, up 5.2%.
Greenhouse gas emissions also fell in six EU countries between October and December. The largest declines were recorded in Estonia (-11.3%), Finland (-6.1%) and Sweden (-2.3%).
Of these six EU countries, two also recorded a decline in GDP: Latvia and Austria. The remaining four (Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Luxembourg) are estimated to have reduced emissions while still growing GDP.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU are estimated at 897 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, down 4% compared to the same period in 2022. GDP in the bloc increased by 0.2% over the same period. The largest declines were recorded in the electricity and gas supply sector (-17.2%) and industry (-3.1%).

At 9:00 a.m. on May 19, steel prices updated from SteelOnline.vn, steel prices in the North, Central and South regions ranged from 13,330 - 14,250 VND/kg for products such as CB240 and D10 CB300.
Northern region: Viet Duc Steel: CB240 coil steel is priced at 13,500 VND/kg, down 150 VND/kg; D10 CB300 ribbed steel is priced at 13,800 VND/kg, up 150 VND/kg. Hoa Phat Steel: CB240 coil steel is priced at 13,790 VND/kg, up 140 VND/kg; D10 CB300 ribbed steel is priced at 13,650 VND/kg, up 340 VND/kg. Viet Sing Steel: CB240 coil steel is priced at 13,600 VND/kg, down 50 VND/kg; D10 CB300 ribbed steel is priced at 13,700 VND/kg, up 50 VND/kg.
