Analysts note that, unlike previous years, pepper hoarding is more widespread this year, leading to a shortage of raw materials even during the peak harvest season.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), pepper prices are rising compared to previous years, benefiting farmers. The forecast indicates that global demand for pepper will remain high, helping prices maintain their upward trend in the coming period.
According to a recent report by Ptexim, despite sluggish market demand, farmers and dealers are holding onto their stock instead of selling. The hoarding of pepper in anticipation of price increases has led to farm-gate prices sometimes exceeding the prices charged by export producers. This situation will make business even more difficult if farmers continue to restrict the sale of their produce to the market.

In Vietnam, despite rising pepper prices, the price is still not attractive enough for farmers to expand their pepper cultivation area. The main reason is that other crops like durian yield higher profits, making people less enthusiastic about expanding pepper farming.
Vietnam's pepper production is trending downwards, from 192,000 tons in 2023 to 183,000 tons in 2024, and is expected to further decrease to 178,000 tons in 2025. With domestic and global inventories nearing rock bottom, experts predict pepper prices will remain high. The US and China remain the two main markets that Vietnam is focusing on.
