On the morning of January 19, the 6th National Book Awards 2023 conference took place in Hanoi .
According to the report of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution ( Ministry of Information and Communications ), the National Book Awards this year have revised and supplemented the Regulations and Charter with a number of important new points, such as: Expanding the nomination objects to not only include publishers and professional associations but also adding the objects of media agencies; expanding the award structure, in addition to the 3 awards A, B, C, an additional consolation award has been added; supplementing the award selection criteria such as adding the "spread" criterion through evaluating the number of printed copies, the amount of press information about the book, the spread of the book and the communication ability if the book wins the award.

The innovations in the Regulations and Rules of the National Book Awards this year have attracted many authors and publishing units to participate with quality books and book series. Specifically, 41 publishing houses submitted books with 312 titles and 435 books, an increase of over 15% compared to 2022. The books and book series proposed for the award are all of guaranteed quality, have rich content, beautiful form, are multidisciplinary, multi-purpose and target many different readers. Many books and book series have high theoretical and practical value, are topical and are of interest to society.
However, this year’s National Book Awards also have many limitations: The number of participating publishers has decreased by 2 units, to 41 publishers. Other subjects such as management agencies, associations, research institutes, and press agencies have not participated. Compared to the project, there are currently some missing awards such as the Readers’ Favorite Book Award, the Book Award with a Large Number of Books, etc.
Sharing at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Chairman of the Central Council for Literature and Art Criticism, emphasized: “The National Book Award has been raised to a higher level in recent years. I have never seen an award judging council that gathers more than 70 experts, scientists , and managers to participate, including many leading and prestigious experts like the National Book Award Council. Personally, I hope that the Publishing Industry will be more interested in specific mechanisms and policies.”

Comrade Tong Van Thanh, Director of the Press and Publishing Department (Central Propaganda Department), Vice President of the Vietnam Publishing Association affirmed that never before has the interest in books and publishing been as great as it is today. Therefore, he hopes that the National Book Award must be the biggest, best, most attractive, attracting the participation of publishers.
"We will absorb the opinions in this conference, move towards building a more detailed and large-scale project to report to the leaders of the Central Propaganda Department so that the National Book Award can increasingly affirm its position and have a wide influence in the social community," Comrade Tong Van Thanh emphasized.
At the conference, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam affirmed that in the coming time, he will continue to innovate and optimize to bring the National Book Award to a new level, in which he will try to promote the media effect. "Books play an increasingly important role in reviving culture, protecting the Vietnamese value system, connecting generations in the country and Vietnamese people abroad. Therefore, the National Book Award must be given more importance," the Deputy Minister explained.
