VnExpressVnExpress09/06/2023

Hanoi Three months after giving birth, the 31-year-old mother cut out starch and practiced high-intensity exercise to lose weight to the point of exhaustion and had to be hospitalized.

On June 9, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, said the patient was admitted in a state of exhaustion, irregular blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and gastric ulcer.

The patient said that before pregnancy, she weighed 45 kg and was 1.6 m tall. After giving birth, she gained 22 kg so she decided to lose weight. She completely cut out starch, jogged and jumped rope 5 hours a day. After two weeks of applying this method, her health showed signs of abnormality, and she fainted many times while jogging due to low blood pressure.

Doctor Tuan asked the patient to be hospitalized due to physical exhaustion. The patient requested gastric bypass surgery, but the doctor refused because she was breastfeeding and her body was lacking in many nutrients. Instead, the patient was instructed on a suitable diet to lose weight safely and scientifically .

Dr. Tuan said that pregnant women have hormonal changes in their bodies that lead to weight gain. Postpartum women also have more difficulty losing weight than normal people due to many factors such as ensuring nutrition, milk supply for the baby, psychological stress, and depression.

"The weight loss process requires perseverance and calmness. Don't rush into using unscientific methods, which can affect your health and lead to long-term consequences," said Mr. Tuan.

To lose weight after giving birth, you should eat more vegetables and protein foods, reduce foods containing sugar and fat. Do light exercises such as walking, cycling, then gradually increase the difficulty and duration. Limit stress by practicing yoga, deep breathing, or participating in favorite activities to relax your mind. Drink enough 8-10 glasses of water a day, get enough sleep.

Breastfeeding mothers need to consider the impact of weight loss on the quality of breast milk and providing enough calories for breastfeeding. It is best to discuss with a doctor for specific advice.
