Mr. Hoang Quang Son, 75 years old, is originally from Yen Bai province, grew up in Lao Cai province, and currently resides in Binh Yen Dong 1 neighborhood, Ward 4, Tan An City, Long An province. From a young age, he was instilled with a patriotic spirit and inherited the revolutionary traditions of his family.

In 1967, he enlisted in the army, and in 1969, he crossed the Truong Son Mountains to support the battlefield in the South. The 3 months and 16 days of walking through forests and mountains is a period he will never forget. Of the 600 people in the group, only 450 remained; the rest perished along the Truong Son Mountains due to malaria. He himself nearly died in the jungle from this disease, not to mention the effects of Agent Orange sprayed by the enemy. Despite facing many difficulties, the soldiers' spirits remained unwavering; everyone was steadfast and determined for national independence.

Veteran Hoang Quang Son (second from the left, Ward 4, Tan An City) has made many contributions to supporting his comrades in overcoming difficulties.

In the South, Mr. Son participated in many fierce battles, contributing to the Great Victory of Spring 1975. Mr. Son recounted: “Those days were very hard, wartime! When we were stationed in Dong Thap Muoi, our clothes were always wet, and at night we had to bury ourselves in the water, our heads resting on water hyacinths. We only wished for a high mound of earth to lie on, but there wasn't one.” Despite these hardships, he did not lose heart, maintaining his unwavering faith until the day of victory.

Having gone through the war, he was awarded the Third Class Resistance Medal by the State, and the title of Hero of Destroying Mechanized Vehicles (he shot down an American M41 tank in the Bu Dop battlefield, Binh Phuoc province),...

After the country was reunified , he and his wife worked as civil servants, and their three children were born one after another. Life was sometimes difficult, but the couple remained steadfast and determined. When the State decided to establish the Veterans Association, he actively participated in providing material and moral support to his comrades; contributing money and labor to repair houses, encouraging them to strive for a better life;...

Every month, he participates in a revolving fund to support war veterans in need. He also enthusiastically participates in the work of identifying fallen soldiers and bringing their remains back to their hometowns for burial. Currently, all three of his children are Party members and have stable jobs.

According to Tran Van Don, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Tan An City, it's not just Mr. Son, but all veterans love and support each other in life. They always uphold the qualities of soldiers of Uncle Ho in both wartime and peacetime.
