Security experts have just discovered 15 malicious applications targeting users worldwide, including users in Vietnam. It is estimated that 8 million smartphones have installed them.
Experts from security research firm McAfee have discovered 15 malicious applications that mimic low-interest loan apps. The purpose of these applications is to steal personal data and even extort money from users.
| These malicious apps impersonate loan apps with the aim of stealing personal information and extorting money from users. |
These malicious applications will ask users to provide personal information such as bank account details, identification documents, or portrait photos in order to borrow money. In reality, these applications are only intended to collect information and do not provide any loans.
Some apps still lend money to users, but with fees and interest rates that are much higher than what was promised.
These malicious applications will mimic the interfaces of legitimate financial institutions and use countdown tactics to offer attractive loan packages. This will make users feel urgent, unwilling to miss out on a good opportunity, and quickly provide personal information to receive loans at preferential interest rates.
These apps also demand many excessive permissions when installed on smartphones, such as allowing them to read incoming messages, track call history, or even request permission to use the device's camera.
These permissions would allow hackers to collect sensitive information on users' smartphones, and then use that information to extort or scam them.
Security experts say that the scammers behind these malicious apps use victims' facial images to manipulate and superimpose them onto pornographic content for the purpose of threatening or extorting money. The scammers even threaten to kill victims if they don't pay interest on loans taken out through the app.
McAfee experts say these malicious apps target users in South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. An estimated 8 million smartphones have already had them installed.

Among the top 10 countries with the highest number of people who have installed these malicious apps, India, Mexico, and the Philippines rank first, while Vietnam is in eighth place.
McAfee has notified Google about these malicious applications. Below is a list of 15 applications that McAfee has identified.
Among these malicious applications is one called "Cash Loan - Borrow Money" - targeting users in Vietnam. The app has already been installed over 100,000 times on various devices. If you have installed this fraudulent app, please uninstall it immediately.
