According to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, currently in Hai Duong there are more than 94,100 dog and cat owners with more than 112,200 registered and managed dogs and cats according to regulations. From 2022 to present, the province has not recorded any animals (dogs, cats and other animals) infected with or having to be destroyed due to rabies. Also during the above period, Hai Duong has not recorded any deaths due to rabies. However, every year, thousands of people have to receive preventive treatment due to bites from pet dogs and cats. In 2023, there were 3,752 cases requiring preventive treatment, an increase of 1,186 cases compared to 2022.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Duong province has just requested relevant departments, branches, units, People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to resolutely and effectively implement rabies prevention work. Thereby, in order to continue to focus on directing and resolutely and effectively implementing rabies prevention work in accordance with the provisions of law; prevent the risk of increasing the number of people requiring preventive treatment for rabies due to animal bites, especially stray dogs and cats, which are dangerous to people.
In 2023, the province administered 68,750 doses of rabies vaccine to dogs and cats, accounting for over 70% of the number of dogs and cats required to be vaccinated. Since the beginning of the year, the province has administered about 35,500 doses of rabies vaccine to dogs and cats, accounting for over 50% of the number of rabies vaccine doses required to be administered to dogs and cats in 2024.
